First lift the car and put jack stands on the frame just behind where the lower control arms attach. Then go under the hood with a deep well socket and an extension or two and loosen the top bolts. Then take off the front tires and there will be two bolts on the bottom of the shock you have to hold the nuts under side of the axle. I think all the tools for the shocks are 13mm iirc from the last time i did mine

How to replace the shocks on my 2002 jeep grand Cherokee??

shocks are easy my friend. make sure you have shocks in the front not struts. a strut will have a spring around the shock with a large steel plate holding the spring to the strut. first off. the car does not have to be lifted to change the rear and if you have shocks on the front as well. just simply remove the lower and upper mounting hardware then change. i can not say enough make sure you have shocks in the front and not struts. struts are a pain and can be very dangerous to replace if you dont have the correct equipment

That's probably one of the easiest jobs you can do. Just remove the bolt at each end and put the new one in the same way the old one came out.

It has shocks and struts. The struts on are the steel tubes that contain a form of hydralic fluid, the shocks are the large springs.

Front shocks

You need a deep 9/16 socket for the top nut, on a swivel would be great. Keep the jeep on the ground and remove the top nut first. Remove the bottom 1/2 inch nuts and bolts (2). Install in reverse order.
