Ford 300 timing

Hi i put a efi ford 300 in my 1980 f150 and having a had time getting the timing set for to get it started. i had to take the disturtor out not sure if i am out 180 or not but it is back firing in the carb.

The way I used to do it is to take out the #1 spark plug, put your finger near the hole and click the engine over.When air begins coming out of the cylinder, look at the rotor in the distributor. You should begin with the number one spark plug wire just ahead of where the rotor is when the compression stroke starts.

An improper spark plug gap or a cracked spark plug they can crack a little if put in to tight also check fuel filter when u get plugs always check the gap hope this helps also could be clogged fuel injectors if efi system

I have a 1980 ford f-150 4.9 300 straight 6 what are the stock timing specs and what is the stock air/fuel mixture for the 1 barrel carter cab


The timing is 10 BTDC with the spout shorting par removed. The car is set to lean best idle and then 1/8 turn in to lean it a bit more for emissions compliance.

Have you disconnected the spout plug located near the ignition module plug? This must be disconnected to remove the computers control of the timing.

it sounds like the engine jumped time you may have to replace timing chain

8 degrees BTDC. Should be listed on your emissions sticker on the radiator mount crossmember. Remember to disconnect and plug your vacuum advance tube.

u have to unplug the spout small gray plug on driver side in the eng comp . on the fender wall on plug that set timming thing it should b 10 deg b4 top dead center then plug spout back in comp will adv timming
