I have the same problem. Occurs in both reverse and drive, mostly when first put in gear from park. The wrench light comes on in the display. Had it analyzed and was told, yes, the problem registered, and no, can't find anything wrong. I have just learned to hold the brake down for 20 seconds or so before putting the car in gear. Helps minimally.

Same problem here. Just started doing it but it is very dangerous if you arent paying attention. I talked to a service manager and it seems to be a common problem. Maybe they will recall the vehicle before someone get injured.

I have the same problem - more noticable when I turn the wheels when the car is not moving. The wrench light came on one time now my engine light is on - I am taking to the dealer tomorrow.

Surge happens only when the a/c is on. The wrench light came on once but when we turned the engine off and back on, it turned off. Not sure what to do next.

When I'm maneuvering in a parking space and i have to go into reverse or forward, it suddenly lurches (forward or backward, either way) and I have to keep alert on the brake. sometimes the wrench light comes on. I turn the ignition off, and the wrench light goes out and the car may even operate normally. I've had instances where the engine stalls (during the lurch) and the wwrench light comes on. If I don't turn the ignition off quickly, the engine light comes on and may stay on for a few days (wrench light goes out after ign. off) the dealer says it's the throttle body which is not covered. I'm getting a second opinion, 'cause I'm broke.

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma and today had a problem with the engine surging. I was at a local mall and driving around the perimeter road which has many stop signs so people can exit to major roads. The average speed was no more than 5 MPH and when I almost stop the car tried to take off. Since I already had my foot on the brake I pushed as hard as I could and then shifted to neutral. The back tires spun and were heared squealing and I am sure left some rubber. Those with Tacoma's know this is almost impossible. It is by no means a fast or quick vehicle. needles to say it was a harrowing experience which my wife as a passenger wanted to know what happened. I am an engineer and fairly strong (6'-4") so I know something is wrong. Accelerator, airflow or transmission come to mind. I will have a great discusssion with my local Toyota dealer tomorrow!

Remember this is the same company that would not admit a sludge problem was really their improper design for oil flow back a few years ago. They finally agreed to replace all engines with the problem without admitting guilt. I can remember going into a Lexus dealer and talking to the sales person. I wanted to know more about the problem before I committed to a new vehicle. They thought I was crazy and brought out the Manger of their Service facility who admitted to the problem and shocked the sales individual. I left a bought a BMW.

I had this problem with my wifes 2007 freestyle. Here is the GREAT news. I bought a $5.00 can of throttle body cleaner - and cleaned the throttle body. It no longer surges! What a EASY fix. If you need more info - youtube throttlebody cleaning - it is simple on the freestyle!!!

Hey! Me too same problem. Just a slight increase in RPM after putting car in reverse or drive and with foot on the brake, presumably brake light circuit lit. Just enough to be startling, then annoying. And yes, the dealer said it registers as possible problem with the throttle body, but then cant't repeat the problem. I am thinking maybe there is a current leakage into the fuel injection system from the brake light circuit because that's the only time it seems to happen.

My 2010 jeep patriot with a 2.4 is surging when u accelerate from a stop.

Could be any one of a number of sensors for engine control . Mass air flow sensor , TPS - throttle position sensor, or APP- accerator pedal position sensor etc... Without testing an looking at scan tool data ,who could say for sure . How does the vehicle idle ? how does the vehicle run at cruise speeds ? Does the vehicle have electronic throttle control ? 2010 - i'm sure it probably does . Is the check engine light lit ? Your best bet would be to take it to a qualified repair shop.

2000 Suzuki Esteem 1.8L.. I went to start my motor & turned it off right before started. I heard some kind of backfire. Then I started it and it's been idling high, the surging. Please help!!

scan it yet, a FULL OBD2 scan? why not?if not.
now is the time...

the 1.8L J18 engine, same as the older Sidekick sports used.
same engine , know it I do.
its the precursor to the J20, (j18 is under-stroked, j20 with many of the same parts. inside)
the back fire means explosion sound to rear end of tail pipe?
yes, that is rich raw fuel in the muffler. plus Air.
if there are exhaust cracks and then engine goes rich this can happen( a double failure)
if how ever BACK means, back to the Air cleaner, then that be different reasons, (timing)

engine now starts.?>
engine runs.? has full power, car drives ok.?
SURGE,. you never said.

does engine get hot? 180F or more and holds (y/n)
ever get a full tuneup this decade,
most dont so i tell you, bad spark causes, misfire and raw fuel is wasted to the exhaust and sure can go boom.

surging usually means the ISC can not control idle
so it hunts, (a suzuki software engine on all 90s engines)
PCM errors, inside it. (dangerous too)
a modern car, if idle goes too high the ecu commands the ISC closed
and holds it there solid, (safe way , no hunting allowed now)]
so if this car surges, it's , lean engine.

some think flooding is surging.
and this is usually below 800 rpm,
almost stalls, then corrects, seems like a surge.

next time post rpm range of surge.?????

do not drive a surging engine, do not be like Toyota drivers. (over 800 rpm hot)

surge from 400 -800 rpm is class 1 surge.
surge from 800 to say 2000 RPM is class2, and very dangerous to some folks, (key off, get car fixed, tow it)

The ECU controls idle speeds. (hard coded servo controls)

2013 kia optima battery dies next day

I am not so sure removing the positive wire from the battery while engine running is a great test anymore due to the electronics involved in most cars today. I am not sure about the Kia, but I know on other cars the alternator is just fine, but removing the battery lead will stall the engine. Some items need to be powered by the battery and yes, the alternator may in theory keep it running but not if the manufacturer uses a protection diode to protect electronics from reversals, and surges. That was a great test years ago, but it could lead you astray today on some vehicles.

Engine Misses / Surges under load

Sounds like either bad fuel, plugged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. I would try some fuel additive first unless your fuel filter is easy to change out. A weak fuel pump will eventually quit working so that would be the last thing to check since it involves more labor and replacement costs.

Engine surges at rpm over 1500

Look for a vacuum leak (lines and intake), Is the engine light on, were any codes present? A faulty EGR or IAC could cause the problem too. Check the throttle cable for any restrictions.

Engine RPM surge in idle

I was kind of surprised to see your post, I have not run across this problem in my shop yet, maybe just demographics. 1000. bucks to do this job seems high, maybe shop around. I did a little checking on the net and it does seem to be common. I found a very good article, even if you don't want to do it yourself, it may give you some ammo, and help you understand what's involved.
