My power steering goes off, too. I just paid $501.72 to replace two lower control arm bushings, and it still doesn't work. The dealership repair people are currently ordering a part from GM to repair it. Has there been a recall on the power steering of 2005 Cobalts?

2005 Chevy Cobalt with 36,000 miles just driving one day and the power steering warning light came on. The car then completely lost all power steering. Pulled over restarted the car and it drove fine. Now after that first incident it has been messing up ever since.

Me too. Why wont they recall this part? I bought my car used, with only 37,000 miles. It started about a month ago, and getting much worse now. I hear it will completly go out. If its the part I think it is, its only from the dealership, at about 549.00, plus labor. I have seen quotes online on other complaint pages like 1,500 - 2,000 to repair. This is so not right. Repairing this cost as much as an engine, and at 40,000 miles. Now i have to save for the 549.00 pay someone to repair it, and hope this is it. Or take it to the people who charge 2K. I just cant believe they will not recall this thing. Im afraid to let my grand chilren even ride in the car with me. I will post more if i can find anymore answers. Your help is appreciated also.

I Have the Same Problem and this is ********!!!!

  • Anonymous Dec 29, 2008

I have 11,500 miles on my 2005 Cobalt and the power steering warning came on. I turned it off for awhile than tried to drive it again. But you guessed it, the warning came on again. Each time it came on, there was a ****, the steering was hard for a few minutes and then it was okay.

I don't have the money right now to fix it, which means I have not means of transportation. I don't understand why GM isn't recalling this, it is very dangerous to everyone on the road and could cause fatalities.

I too have the same issue with my 2006 Cobalt. Taken to dealer numerous times and claims issue doesn't occur for them. Still under warranty. What step can be taken next ??

i have a 2005 chevy cobalt and it has 76,000 miles on it and my power steering keeps quiting and coming back on i almost wrecked going around a turn because it came back on they should recall the part.

  • Anonymous Feb 23, 2009

They probably won't recall this. I have the same problem, and have fixed it and it did it again when I reached 80,000miles, unfortunately its the price of having a cobalt. GM should recall but they wont. I heard they recalled it on the chevy malibu's but not on this one.....

My Daughter has the same problem. She just purchased a 2005 chevy colbalt 55,000miles and yesterday the power steering light came on and couldn't hardly turn the wheel. The chevy dealer told her the same thing the steering colum was going bad and would have to be replace. $500.00 PLUS. My 5 year old grandson rides in this car. If GM does'nt make good of this defect and he gets injured. They will PAY dearly!!!

    Very Concerned Grandma!

I have the same problem with my 2005 Cobalt. It has 62000 miles on it, and I too tried to talk to the dealer about the recall. They told me unless enough people complain about it, they wont recall! I guess it's going to take someone dying in order for them to do something about it. How much did it cost you guys to get it fixed? I'm pregnant and it makes me nervous to drive with this stupid problem.

SOURCE: Power steering went out, then the car shut down,

It sounds like your serpentine belt broke. Look under the hood and see if you see pulleys without a drive belt (on the front of the engine). Replace the belt if necessary.

What would cause power steering to display and locks to cycle and trans to either downshift or shift to neutral at same time?

Does you vehicle have active on-star? It sounds as if you car is in a anti active theft mode or you have a pcm (power control module problem). Pcm's control just about every function in your vehicle. PCM's are expensive to replace and must be done by a very highly trained person.

The motor is shutting off, better find the problem before it dies while you are pulling out in front of a semi and you end up dead.

Auto won't start

curious, i've seen this before but not whith this kind of car. if you park with the steering wheel turned to one side or the other, when you shut the car off, the power steering also shuts off. this could be putting pressure on the steering wheel when it locks off. next time, before turning off the motor, aim the wheels straight ahead first. be sure the steering wheel is straight on before you turn the engine off. this time, when you turn the motor off, the power steering will not be a factor. hopefully it eliminate the problem.

Car dangerous with no power steering

This is a well known problem with these Cobalts. Ours (we had 2) both had to have the steering column replaced to fix this.
It's caused because the power steering assist (electric motor) on the column stops working. It usually will reset after you shut the car down for a few minutes and restart it.
Hopefully it's under warranty, else it'll cost a grand or more to replace.
