Overheating exaust system 1997 dodge dakota has caused exhaust pipe failure 3 times in past 60 days. Mechanic said unburnt fuel is burning inside pipe and causing failure. True?

I suspect that it is over fuelling and the cat converter is blocking the exhaust
check ignition timing as it is probably too far retarded which causes later spark in relation to the valve timing position where the exhaust valve is opening allowing burning fuel into the exhaust manifold,

Check engine light comes on - no definitive computer code. Just says multi-cylinder malfunction. Mechanic needs more detailed diagnosis to begin repairs. Light goes out & comes back on 2 months later

this can be caused by a few different things but the most common cause for this problem is a engine misfire caused by faulty spark plug/or wire. these dodge trucks also have had some issues with dirty injectors. since i do not know the mileage of your vehicle im assuming being a 05 it is ready for some maintainence. start with checking the ignition components and replace as necessary. then clean your injectors. your mechanic should have the proper equipment to do a "pressure cleaning" which is done through the fuel rail(not a pour in the gas tank treatment) this should remedy your problem. hope this information was helpful!!
