Question about 2003 Chevrolet Malibu

2003 chervolet malibu - 60,000 miles

Every so often the car will not start because the passlock anti-theft flashes on the dash. Usually it starts again after I go through the 10 check the manual suggests ( leave ignition on for 10 minutes til light on dash goes off, turn ignition off for a few seconds, then restart). My mechanic has never been able to get a computer code that tells anything is wrong. What's wrong and what solutions are there to this problem? I have had the car a little more than three months and it has happened at least four times.

Same problem I have with my daughters 1997 Malibu. I've had the ignition sensor replaced twice and some wiring harnes replaced too. Still does the same thing. Any suggestions?

I have a 2003 Malibu, 3.1 V6, 120K miles. Normally when I turn the ignition switch to on, all indicator warning lights and gas gauge work in the ip cluster. After a few seconds only the battery, check engine, theft system and gas are still operating. Also the heater fan and radio are operating since they were on previously. I can turn the switch to start and the car will start.

    Here's the intermittent problem:
Sometimes only the theft light operates (along with fan and radio) when I turn the switch to on. The car won't start when I turn the switch to start. After 10 seconds or sometimes 60 seconds, all of the lights and gas gauge operate. I can then start the car.

On two occasions, the lights and gauge operated only momentarily. I waited a little while and then everything operated and I was able to start the car.

Do you have any suggestions on what is causing the problem and how to fix it? I don't think the battery and ignition switch are causing the problem.

This happens on my '99 Malibu, too. No one I've talked to seems to know how to fix it, or they'll insist I take it to a Chevy stealership to get it fixed.

When anti theft light is blinking the car wont start. Can you bypass the anti theft device

On a 2003 Chevy Maibu the theft system light comes on and blinks when the system is triggered. The car will not start and the fuel pump cuts out. You must turn key to on and have all doors closed. Keep the key to on for 10 mins til theft light turns solid and then disappears. Then turn key to start and it should fire up.

all general motors vehivles from 97-2005 contain an anti-theft system, called a passlock system. try this it will work on a malibu theft system. turn key on engine off for about 10 minutes, after 10 minutes turn key off. wait 15 seconds then try to start car. if it is the passlock system this will reset it.

Starts but quits

If the engine starts and then quits when you release the key to the ON position it could be the anti-theft systemhas locked out. Turn your key to the ON position and wait ten minutes until the ANTI-THEFT light on the dash board goes out. The car will now start and run if that was the problem.

1998 Chev Malibu starts then stalls

The most likely cause for the problem you are describing is the anti-theft system. GM calls it a passlock system. Your car has a 'key-reader' mounted on the ignition lock cylinder (inside the steering columnm, or inside the dash, depending on where your key goes). This 'key-reader' sends out a signal to the body control module indicating that the proper key is in the ignition. Note: this style antitheft system does not have 'chip' in the key. These key-readers fail frequently and send a an incorrect singal the the module, where the car will start and run for a few seconds, then stall. An easy verification of this problem is to watch for your security light to be flashing somewhere on your dash. The passlock cylinder is only available from the dealer, and while it is a fairly easy part for someone like me to change, I do not recommend it for someone who is not a mechanic. Additionally, even if you do change the passlock cylinder, you have to perform a re-learn procedure or the car will never start. This probably isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but better that you know. Hope this helps!
