Question about 2008 Toyota RAV4

Toyota Rav4 problem

I recently purchased a used Toyota Rav4 ’97 with 125,000 mileages on it. The first incident happen while I was driving on the free way exit when I had to slow down; the car start to rattle and did not know what to do so I kept driving until the next stop sign which the car started to shack violently and died on me. So I had to pull out and wait a couple of minutes and restart the ignition ….the car start moving again with no problem. This incident had happened for several times in the last three months. I took my car to several mechanics so far no body could tell me what the exactly problem is. To date I have changed Air Filter, Fuel filter, Fuel injectors and did a complete tune up. Could someone tell me what else to do please????

    Hi Again,

Since I am no expert in this department, I am a bit confused with the solution you stated “You may have a seized overdrive solenoid in the valve body”. I have no clue what did it mean. It would be nice if you could tell me what needs to be changed or checked.

P.S. Yes my Toyota Rav4’97 has automatic transmission.

    Many Thanks

Automatic transmiision? You may have a seized overdrive solenoid in the valve body.

My apologies. Sorry that I was not more clear. But, what I have observed here is when owners get the problem that you are describing, the overdrive solenoid inside the transmission is stuck, and it is not letting the torque converter disengage from the overdrive gear. Simply put, the engine cannot idle (it will stall) if the torque converter is stuck in the overdrive, or "locked" application inside the transmission.... What I would do, if I were you, would be to have a qualified Toyota tech perform a complete transmission flush, using the proper ATF fluid which is specific to the RAV/4. Using any other type of ATF will damage the transmission. If the problem is not corrected after that, the last recourse woul be to have a Toyota transmission tech observe the condition, and most likely, he will remove the transmission oil pan, remove the transmission valve body, and replace the affected solenoid.

Sounds like the logic is going out. You could try to reset it. Plug the cluster fuse. Look in your manual, you may have more than one to pull. Leave them out for a minute. If it doesn't work, your looking at replacing the cluster. Call a dealer for warranty and recall info.
