I have a 1998 z24 cavalier. Under load in higher gears it has a bad misfire. It can be corrected if i downshift. It only happens when the motor is under heavy load. It has no dtc's. I pulled the plugs. they are ok. i ran a fuel injection cleaning service. i cleanded the throttle plate. The only thing left is the coil on top of the valve cover. The coil is what i initially thought to be the problem but since i am a mechanic i just checked and did the cheap stuff first before spending the money on a coil. Is this a common or somewhat common problem on the z24?

I would def check the coils first. my sister had a ford focus that did the same thing and down shifting would make it a lot smoother. but the coils seem to be bad and your losing power due to it.

2001 jeep Cherokee sport out of no where started sputtering and chugging, running rough and 10 mph was top speed go about 20 ft then die. Start up and same thing. Went about 1-2 miles like this.

to me, it sounds like fuel related problem.
Clogged fuel filter, bad (aged) fuel pump, or water in tank.

one thing I doubt is "Sputtering".
low fuel pressure don't do "Sputtering".

1972 olds 98 455ci starts and runs fine when its cold but once i've driven it for awhile it starts sputtering like its running out of gas

sounds like a vapor lock. older cars needed a set of points . they kept firing times in sync with fuel delivery , valves opening/closing try that.

98 jeep grand cherokee when starting in morning

Tour problem is likely the crankshaft position sensor, a common problem with this model. It is located on the flywheel and can be that the sensor has failed or simply that is is covered with grease and isn't reading the rotation of the flywheel properly.

2004 grand cherokee 4.0l one day it will run fine the next day it runs rough rich and when i step on the gas the engine cuts out and spits and sputters

When the "spits and sputters" happen are you in low rpm? Can you "by-pass" the sputtering by accelerating? Has your gas mileage suffered?

My 2005 Ranger won't run. The check engine light reads cyl 2 misfire so we changed the plugs. We also changed the fuel filter. It starts but won't run. It sputters and chugs. Don't know what else to do?...

You more than likely have a bad spark plug wire on cylinder # 2. But considering that when it starts it only sputters and chugs, you have more wrong than just one bad plug wire. Are you 100% positive you have the plug wires connected correctly. Here is a diagram of both the 3.0 & 4.0 V6. You may also have a bad coil pack. clay58_44.png

98 cavalier 2.4 automatic, starts idles fine, put in drive, 3rd, 2nd, 1st and start to accelerate it sputters hesitates and misses, does not do it in reverse only forward, ets light and eng. light on...

depenging on the last time the car had a tune up you may just have weak spark plugs and wires giving a poor spark and causing it to missfire under a load

1995 Jeep grand cherokee is missing while running. When it is under a heavy load (driving fast) it runs fine. When idleing and slow driving it spits and sputters.

I have the same problem on my 95 grand cherokee laredo. Sometimes it starts out fine and after about 10 miles it starts spitting and sputtering. Then after a while it seems to clean out and run fine again for a little while. Then other times it starts out spitting and sputtering at the begining. I changed the fuel filter and that was not it. It is a 4.0L 6cyc. Any Ideas?
