Question about Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

I have a 1994 Toyota pickup suddenly Friday the ignition key would not turn. Not wanting to break the key off I jiggled worked the wheel back and forth the transmission lever nothing seemed to help. I squirted some WD-40 back into the cylinder and left it for a day or so. Anyway eventually I got it to work backwards and forth but it has a rough spot in about a half a turn of the switch feels like it's hitting a bur or something rough inside. The truck still starts and runs fine but I'm leery driving it to work now for afraid I'll wind up stuck in the parking lot. Just wondering if anyone has run across the problem I got a feeling it's something has got out of alignment or needs lubricating badly. Funny it worked as smooth as a whistle then all the sudden this happen. Appreciate any help.

Hi. sounds like your ignition lock is stickey not retracting all the way thus meeting partially with the ''hole'' its supposed to lock in, in the steering coulomb. i suggest you remove ,properly clean and inspect the lock for problem areas, kindly lubricate the involved bits and test, if all fails replace the ignition lock.

96 camry ignition key very hard to turn. have to violently jiggle, turn wheel, stomp brakes to get ignition to turn. is it ignition, steering lock, breaks?

Have you tried getting a new key cut? Worn keys can do that. Other than that I would say a worn out ignition lock cylinder. Mike

I have a 2000 toyota corolla and the key will only turn to acc. We have tried the other key. The stering wheel is unlocked. We have jiggled the shifter to make sure it is in park.

See if you turn the wheel and try to turn the key at the same time if it releases. We might get a free spot where the key should turn. The lock may be in a bind and pressure on it may release it.
Clean and lubricate the lock cylinder. Electric cleaner to flush the dirt and liquid graphite to lubricate. A substitute for the electric cleaner is a spray of isoprophyl alcohol.
You may also need to tap the assembly for the ignition switch to release the mechanical parts. See if you can get the cover of the steering column off to gain access to the ignition switch assembly.
Check also if the spare does the same, other wise the key may have deformed.

How do you remove an ignition switch on a 1994 Toyota Pickup?

If you need to remove the whole switch key and steering lock, you need to drill or punch the mounting screw to loosen them, they are called tamperproof and when installed the top breaks of so they cant be removed. If you just need to replace the electrical part, they often come off the back of the key part with a couple of screws, check with a mirror and torch

1995 toyota .my dashlights and intreior light do not work.had starter replaced .problem started then

assuming the battery is good. if none of the dash light come on while the key is in the ignition and it turn to on position, check fuse and relay and ignition systems. see if you can play with with ignition systems by jiggle and wiggle turning the key back and forth start the engine and see if you get any contact. all dash light has to come on when the key is turn to on position, if not you have no power to ECU. ecu turn on everything from your fuel pump and the sparks. hope that help some

Key stopped turning the ignition, tried two keys all of the sudden my key will not turn in the ignition

When the key is severely worn, the bumps become too short to push the little plungers in sufficiently. Push the key toward the bumps as you turn it. If this works, get a new key made. Possibly you will need to present the key for copying with a little tape on the back to make it wider.

Key stuck in ignition on 89 plymouth sundance

Without taking the ignition apart, you will really have to do some work, what you might want to do is get in the passenger side, grab the key with a good set of pliers, and get some leverage. If you grab, move the key back and forth while jiggling the wheel, the lock should come loose and the key should slide out. Be careful not to turn the key too far, because then you'll break it off, hope that works.
