On my 1996 model, the starter is below the engine and you must remove the catalytic converter, as well as a metal bracket, etc. a repair manual may be a good investment, as the starter, as well as other issues you may meet later, can be complex, in bad places, and quite frustrating.
On a side note, before you tackel this, if you have not already, if you are able to start it, places like Advance Auto Parts can check the batt, alt, and starter while they are in the vehicle. It seems that some people are haveing problems recently, such as myself, where it is not the starter. It would stink to change the starter and have it still not work.
I hope this helps, have a happy holiday.

Whats happends if you take it in to get the starter fixed on it how long does it take? Also when I got it back from the Auto shop My tape radio does not work and says loc does not even turn on. It was...

q1; time to fix, (fix can be 25 things wrong, and each FIX is diffrent times)
a dead starter can be 5min fix to 2 hours.(replaced)
is the battery good, and charged? if not , its not the starter.
if battery is good, then its the start system, it is a system of wires and solenoid and starter. ( does the starter hot wire and work?)
if yes, its not a bad starter. (hot wired at the solenoid)
took me 2hrs to replace a starter, and 1hr second time.
depends on, if bolts are seized, or bad, or wont budge.
if you live in the SALT belt, it can be a real hard job.
q2: dead head, the radio (tape, wow tape, is like old tech) is dead?
tape and A/M and F/M are dead?
well, you apply power to it , and if dead, it is. time for new Radio, etc.
yes there is a fuse.
is your radio programmable. ? sure it is.
when replacing a battery, or starter, one kills the radio program storage. that is norm effect, unless mech has my magic tool that stops that.
few have the magic tool, a cig lighter plug with a 9v battery inside.
also , you lose alarm programming, and any other fancy gear that needs battery to hold programming..
there are only 3 costs.
1: diagnosis.
2: parts
3: labor.
all 3 vary by LOCATION.

65 mustang l6 200 cid. Starter motor seems to keep "locking" up flywheel. Why is it doing that? Best fix?

This could be a starter solenoid defect but if this has been a problem for some time, the ring gear could be chewed up or have missing or broken teeth. Itmay be possible to fix the problem by shimming the solenoid but I would check out the other items first

Sounds like you have a bad starter solenoid. Replace JUST the money....that'll fix your problem.....unless you just want to replace the whole starter assembly!

Does banging on the starter actually help it activate if it is stuck? I am unable to start my car and previously a friend was able to get it running by banging on the starter while I turned the ignition....

Banging on the starter can shock it enough to free a stuck starter solenoid, the smaller cilindrical part on the top. This might even get a few more starts out of the starter but I would recomend getting it started and bringing it to a shop, or replacing it. its only going to go out on you again and maybe in a worse spot then it is right now.
