No work light brakes - 1999 Mercury Cougar

There are several possible reasons why the 3rd brake light on your 2005 Chevy Malibu works only with the key in the accessory position and not when the car is running.

1. The brake light switch: The brake light switch is responsible for turning on the brake lights when the pedal is depressed. If the switch is malfunctioning, it may not be sending the signal to the brake light when the key is in the "on" or "start" position.

5. The code PO573 that is coming up is related to the brake light switch, it could be a symptom of the problem.
6. The cruise control not working can also be related to a problem with the brake light switch.

Light gets power from brake light switch/.May be switch got shorted an brake light getting non-stop power causing it not to turn OFF brake light.

Get the brake light switch checked. Check volt at brake light switch.

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its wiring short for switch.

Turn signal tail lights and BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its blown brake light bulb. First check and confirm brake light lamp is working and that's not the case.

For starters it is spelled "Brake" light...LOL . Sounbds like you may have a brake light switch that has gone out. In yor owners manual does it show more than one fuse for the brake lights? Most vehicles with a thrid/highmount brake light split the brake light power to either the left and third brake light and the right brake light or vice versa, or posibble 3rd brake light on its own fuse. I would check if all of the brake light including the 3rd brake light dont work. If no lights work at all it leans toward the switch which controls all or them to activate hence the brake light switch. It should be mounted on your brake peal arm or to the main base. The pedal lever activate the switch when you depress the brake pedal.

COULD HAVE FAULTY BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR BAD GROUND WIRE AT BRAKE LIGHTS AND TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS.

the center and brake light are not on the same circuit, check voltage coming from the switch

Check for power out of brake light switch by brake pedal. Of its faulty , the 3rd brake light will still work. Hope this helps

do you have a 3rd brake light like on that is on the roof or in the rear window? if so does it work?
the brake lights are usually a 2way bulb so just because the lights work doesn't mean that brake lights will. if the 3rd brake light works replace the brake light bulbs if none of them work including your 3 brake light. check into having your brake switch changed. that is the switch under the brake pedal. when it is pressed the brake lights come on and when released they go off. if the bulbs do not fix the problem than try the switch.
