Question about 1985 Mercury Topaz

1 Answer

1992 mercury topaz

I think I might need a tune up, the problem is the idle, when I apply the brakes, the idle turns racey and sometimes dies, I put it in park and she starts back up again (so far). It has a racey idle when I'm coasting also, like on my gravel road I don't apply the gas to see what she is doing, and she kind of takes off on her own but then idles down again. Could this be a tune up issue? Thanks.

How do I adjust the idle on a 93 mercury topaz?

I would clean the throttle body first and the idle air control motor(IAC). Clean where the plate sits and on the back of it/them. You have to remove the IAC to clean it. Brake clean and a toothbrush works fine. If it still is high. Diagnostics need done for the IAC. Most times it is the IAC.

1987 mercury topaz that has a rough idle and then stalls, the car will not stay on

Three things come to mind.

First is it a rough idle at normal rpm level which could indicate the throttle body needs cleaning.

Second is you have a faulty Idle Air Control valve (IAC)'

Third is you have clogged or dripping injectors. Injectors should have a smooth cylindrical spray pattern.

1992 mercury topaz

I had the same problem. It was the idle air control valve. It sits on top of the intake just downstream from the throttle. There's a valve rod inside that gets worn over time and starts to stick. If that's what is causing your problem, you need to replace the unit.
