Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Trouble Starting I have a 97 Pontiac Sunfire, which is in great running condition. It has one small problem that I've been unable to diagnose, or fix. The car, when starting cold (up to -20) starts fine. And when the car is hot, (driven within an hour) it starts fine. If the car is left between an hour and 6 hours, when it is started, it turns over too many times before starting, and sometimes just doesn't start until it has been left for another 10 minuts. Any fixes I could perform, or solutions I could take it to a shop for?

You need to check to see if the fuel pressure bleeds down, hook up a guage to the fuel rail port, turn key on for a moment then turn it off, the fuel pressure should not drop more than 5 PSI in 24 hours, if it does the fuel pump check valve is defective, this allows the fuel lines to drain down and causes long cranking to start. You will have to replace the pump to fix this problem.

po141 code is downstream oxygen sensor heater or circuit fault. that should not keep it from starting cold...but cars are funny like that!!

Pontiac Sunfire 1997. Won't start.

When jumped off ,if it drags to start, have the starter checked, and if when jumping the car off,the starter turns the engine over real good, then the cables are most likely the problem, replace them.

Ok. my car 97 pontiac sunfire needed a new alternator output cable. guy put a new one on but apparently messed with something else and now its not starting. said the theft light came on and that it isnt...

Tell the guy to call the dealer and ask them how to override the anti theft system or reset it. when you disconnect the battery and lose power it kicks on the anti theft device and it won't get fire.

Sunfire gt 97 2.4L. car won't start, small

sounds like a starter solenoid went bad which it is easier to replace the whole starter assembly then just the solenoid and you can get one with a LLT Limited Life Time warranty.

Problems Starting

You can have your starter checked for excessive draw (happens in old worn units) You can do this yourself by placing a voltmeter between both battery posts and cranking the engine. Battery should have 12v. When cranking, volts should not go below 10...9.5 at lowest. If it does, the starter is worn out. If voltage is OK, then you have a problem in either fuel or ignition system.

Trouble with my speedometer starting off at 60 or 100

Pretty common on the 03-05 Sunfire instrument clusters. It's caused by the stepper motors on the cluster circuit board going bad but it can be fixed. Check out this page for more about how to get it fixed - Sunfire speedometer fix
