Question about Mazda Protege

1 Answer

CAR LOOSING POWER. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. ONLY CODE IS CYLINDER 2 MISFIRE. JUST HAD A COMPLETE TUNE UP. TRIED NEW MASS AIRFLOW. THINKING IT MUST BE THE ECU COMPUTER. THERE IS A MAJOR HESITATION IN THE ENGINE. WHEN YOU UPSHIFT, THE CAR HESITATES, SOMETIMES WILL RECOVER, SOMETIMES NOT. JUST SPUTTERS TO A STOP. FOR A WHILE, I COULD JUST TURN THE KEY OFF AND BACK ON AND BE OFF AND RUNNING AGAIN. NOT ANYMORE. SHE WON'T RUN AT ALL. 1.5 LITER. THANKS.

I have been having a problem with power in my 1996 Mazda Protege. I start off and the rpm's rev like crazy but the car is barely moving. This only happens sometimes, and sometimes really bad. Other times it goes OK but then a mile down the road my car starts to buck, and the RPM needle starts jumping as well. I have changed my MAF, I did a tune up, and it is still happening. PLEASE HELP ME!!

I tried solution 1 and it didn't help my 2004 mazda 3, my mechanic said that the car sounds like it is trying to get fuel, so maybe the ecu might need reflashing. I m not sure though, has anyone tried?

I have a 1999 Protege 1.6L with 93,000 miles. And a
1996 1.5L with 170,000 miles.
When my light came on, I got the EGR code read out at Advance Auto ($0). I googled 'Mazda EGR' and found this is frequently due to carbon buildup in the throttle body. It seems the carbon restricts the flow from the EGR, which then calls for a more open valve, and the error code is "excessive flow". Go figure.

Very easy to disassemble throttle body (just check to see where the EGR line is attached to the intake air path, just prior to injector assembly). Sure enough, a clump of carbon around the EGR port in the throttle body. Cleaned it up with a paper clip, Q-tip, and carburetor cleaner. Total cost < $3.
Cleared to code. No light on now, car runs fine.
If your "EGR VALVE" is bad,
you can get one cheap at the url below, and they take Pay-Pal.
Then you can install it of have it installed.

Sometimes...
A less expensive fix is to replace the engine Coolant/Antifreeze "Temp Senser"
This will cut fuel to the injectors if not working properly.
Also replace the engine coolant "Thermostat",
when changing "Temp Senser".
You can pick up both at Auto-Zone for about $35.00.
This fixed our 1996 model. The 1999 model was fixed by replacing the
EGR Valve.

Hope this helps.

A misfire alarm typically means the coil pack mounted above the sparkplug indicated in the misfire had gone defective.

To test it, swap the coil pack with another cylinder, and see if the misfire goes from #2 to the cylinder you put it on.

If the misfire continues to be on #2, then consider changing the sparkplugs.

I hope this helps.

2002 toyota tacoma with a p1135 code and a # 4 cylinder misfire

I have had a problem like that on my Isuzu Rodeo Turns out the o2 sensor was bad. The computer reads it as not enough fuel. The mass airflow sensor will dump more fuel causing the engine miss fire.
You might check the codes again and see if you get the code for the 02 sensor. If so you can try to unplug the 02 sensor, the ck engine light will remain on, however the car should run without any issues.
Good Luck!!

Service engine soon light on; diagnostic code states: cylinder 7, Misfire

you need to have your engine tuned up, unless it's been done recently. misfire means it's not getting fire or fuel to #7 plug. you may have a plug wire bad or a bad spark plug on #7 if you go to effort of sending it to garage just to replace one plug or wire, you'll pay labor for whole tune up. wires, plugs, and maybe a bad coil pack. suggest you have tuned up with new plugs and wires. also while they are there, have them check fire to #7 plug on coil first before you do a complete tune up. thank you for choosing fixya.com

Check engine light for misfire cylinder 2 and 4

If the engine seems like it's OK but you are just seeing a solid Check Engine Light, and if the light has ever mysteriously gone out on its own, check the Knock Sensor. Over time they rust. I have had the repair done on my 2 subies (a 97 and a 99).

The CEL will go out on its own if you have 4 starts with no misfires. If the knock sensor is out, rapid accelleration or steep hill climbing will make the light come back on as the timing advances and the sensor does not ****** the timing for you, so the knocking becomes a misfire.
