Question about 2003 Kia Sorento

1 Answer

Problem Summary: Intermittent stalling, erratic idling, ‘sulphur’-like emissions For the last 2 years our Kia Rio Hatchback has had a mysterious intermittent stalling problem which has over time grown worse and is now almost always happening. We have taken it to mechanics and either the problem has not been present during their inspection, or even when present, they have not been able to find the source of the problem/a solution. To describe the engine performance when the car is 'playing up': Once the engine is started you can hear the revs are not uniform. The idle revs can increase and decrease (to the point of stalling) without using the accelerator. As we drive, the engine sounds fragile and will 'chug' at times. The car will often stall when we come to a stop and sometimes as we are slowing down - yes, dangerous in traffic! When driving at higher speeds and the clutch is engaged, the revs will plummet rapidly to near 0. The engine seems to perform a little worse when cold. We can often detect a strong sulphur like smell emitting from the car when it is performing poorly. The car has been driven well and regularly serviced since we purchased the car new 6 years ago (no longer in warranty). Recently the battery has been inspected/cleaned, tried a new air filter (sections had been charred?), cleaning of the throttle body, and computer check indicating no defect & resetting the idle. The mechanics last resort was to replace the IAC valve but with no effect. We have also tried commercial petrol tank cleaning fluids that you add in with fuel (unleaded) to no avail.

I have a Kia Rio 2005 Cinco( 5 door) Running really rough until I push down gas pedal,,, Then it seems lOk still a little r bogged down', It doesn't stall just runs rough without accelerration? Oxyg

To begin with, is your "check engine (CE)" light on? If it was on and now its not, you need to replace the bulb. If CE lights is on, find out the codes before doing anything. If bulb is good and "CE" does not come on, begin with: (1) gapping spark plugs, (2) replace spark plug wires (if haven't changed them within the last 2), then the coil. If your Cinco is still idles rough, adjust gas pedal until idling smoothly. If this still doesn't help, replace your two oxygen sensors. If still running rough, the converter. After doing all this and problem is still present, take it to a mechanic you trust.

Mystery plastic cap in my 2004 Kia Rio. While

IF you use a lot of engine oil then the engine rebuild was not done correctly and the oil is being burnt off in the cat converter. Any more than 1/2 pint in 5.000 miles is excessive. IT would be wise to have the ac pressure tested as you may have high head pressures being generated which will stop the compressor from working. The high head pressures may be from the fact that the fan in front of the condenser is not working or the coolant fan is not working for the engine causing the rise in temp at idle as there is no cooling air through the radiator for both the ac and engine.

2002 kia rio stalls when coming to a stop if the gas is not applied

My personnel fix for this.

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
