Question about 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Check engine light.

Chek engine code reads: evac canister, gas cap and vaccum hose. i recently changed egr valve, selenoid and dpfe sensor for a check engine code>

    I have the same problem and it shakes when stopped.  I opened the hood and moved the large coiled hose by the spot you place oil into and sure enough down from that was a hose the has two decent sized slices in it.  I used electrical tape to hold it temporary unitl I an get a new one. The only problem is I am military serving overseas in Italy and they cant tell em what the part is called or how to order a new one.

Exhaust gas recirculation module check:


1. Note the Differential Pressure Feedback Exhaust Gas Recirculation (DPFE) sensor voltage through the scan tool or backprobe the Brown/Light Green (BN/LG) wire of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Module (ESM). Voltage should indicate a reading of 0.5-1.2 volts.

2. If the voltage of the DPFE sensor is out of range, low or high, disconnect the ESM and note that the voltage of the DPFE sensor circuit should indicate a reading of 5.0 volts.

3. If the DPFE sensor voltage is out of range connected and the reading shows 5.0 volts with the ESM disconnected, reconnect the ESM and verify that the Brown/White (BN/WH) wire shows a 5.0 volt reading and that the Grey/Red (GY/RD) wire shows to be a good ground, indicating a voltage of less than 0.1 volts. If these circuits check to be ok, replace the ESM due to a faulty DPFE sensor.

4. If the DPFE sensor voltage in step 1 is found to be ok, verify that both vacuum hoses to the ESM have full engine vacuum to them when it's running.

5. With the engine idling, backprobe the Brown/Pink (BN/PK) wire and hold it to ground. This should activate the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vacuum Regulator (EVR) solenoid of the ESM. The EGR valve should open, the engine should run rough, and the DPFE sensor voltage should climb.

6. Replace the ESM for a faulty EGR valve, EVR solenoid, or DPFE sensor if the DPFE sensor or engine does not respond to ground activation of the BN/PK wire

P1405 Ford Description
The purpose of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system on your engine is to limit oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. This is done by redirecting small amounts of exhaust gas back through the upper intake to get mixed in with the air/fuel charge. The resultant diluted air/fuel mixture (i.e., less oxygen per cubic foot) burns cooler and combustion chamber temperatures are reduced accordingly, thereby lowering NOx emissions.
The Ford DPFE/EGR system is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The system employs an EGR Valve, an Electronic Vacuum Regulator (EVR), and a Delta Pressure Feedback EGR sensor (DPFE).
The DPFE Sensor measures EGR flow across an orifice located inside the special EGR Tube. The orifice is positioned between two hose ports coming off the tube which are connected to the DPFE sensor with special heat-resistant hoses. When the EGR Valve is open, a pressure differential is created across the orifice (intake manifold pressure vs. exhaust pressure). By design, this difference in pressure is measured by the DPFE sensor in terms of voltage. The DPFE voltage signal output to the PCM is directly proportional to the flow of exhaust gas entering the intake manifold.

Disconnect vacuum supply hose to EGR V.R. solenoid at the solenoid. Connect the vacuum supply hose to a vacuum gauge. Start engine and check the vacuum at idle. Is the supply vacuum greater than 10 in-Hg (34 kPa) ?

P1400 - DPFE (Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic) Sensor circuit Low Voltage

The DPFE sensor is usually not hard to change. There are 2 small rubber hoses that run from the EGR tube to it...

Replace DPFE sensor, reset engine fault codes. The Ford one is a good one and rockauto.com carries Airtex. Sometimes I hear that this change always need replace EGR valve to delet all codes. Test it.

1997 ford f150 just had egr valve replaced.. engine is hesitant and check engine light is on with error code 401.. whats the prob?


Everyone says to test out your DPFE sensor. This controls the flow of the egr. When the codes pull up, everyone thinks its the egr, but really its this little guy.
Take it by a shop and see if they can mess with the bugger. They usually run about $50+.

Replacing the EGR valve, its actuator, or your DPFE sensor could all be at fault. I would probably start with the valve itself since it's an EGR leak code. Your gas cap was a wasted repair. The gas cap would cause a P0441 or 445 evap code, but not an EGR code.

The EGR valve isn't getting the vaccum required to operate the valve. Check engine light is on. replaced the valve in check engine light still come on insuff. air flow


what dtc do you have? is it p1401? if so the description is for insufficent air flow egr circuit. this is typicaly caused by a faulty DPFE sensor (delta pressure feedback emission) it is about the size of a buisness card and about 1/2" thick. its black and has a small wiring connector and 2 thick vaccum hoses hoing to it. Fords first step for repair for this DTC is to replace dpfe sensor and to assure hoses are not ruptured. i STRONGLY SUGGEST to use only factory sensors as it is often i replace new aftermarket ones that done work right from the start. this part is relatively inexpensive....good luck!

Insufficient EGR Flow Detected

Possible Causes:
DPFE sensor signal circuit is shorted to ground
DPFE sensor VREF circuit is open between sensor and PCM
DPFE sensor downstream hose off or plugged
DPFE sensor hoses both off, loose or damaged
DPFE sensor hoses connected wrong (reversed)
EGR orifice tube is damaged or restricted
PCM has failed
And what sets the code is…….Engine started, engine running in closed loop under steady cruise conditions, and the PCM detected the DPFE sensor input indicated insufficient EGR gas flow. Run the KOER Self-Test, and if DTC P1408 is present, the fault is currently present. This code sets in 2 Trip(s). The light will stay on until the cause is repaired. A bad EGR valve is only on possible cause.

Engine light on in 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan - code P0401 What does that code mean?


it is your EGR Valve. EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve
, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR.

Causes A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
  • The EGR valve is faulty
  • The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum
Possible Solutions In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
  • Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
  • Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
  • Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
  • Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
  • Replace the EGR valve
LOCATION:
drivers side of the engine bay, just under the intake manifold plenum where the throttle body bolts up! If you take the air snokel off you'll see it better! It has a remote mountted vaccum solenoid with a 2 wire connector going to it that you should be able to see near the throttle body.
Follow the hose from the solenoid down to the valve and you'll find it!

The DPFE (Diferential Pressure Sensor)sensor is usually mounted on the engine and is connected to the pipe that runs from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve with two rubber hoses. When the sensor goes bad, the Check Engine light comes on and typically sets any or all of teh following fault codes: P0171 & P0174 (lean codes), and/or P0401 (insufficient EGR flow). Nine out of ten times, the fault is not a bad EGR valve or a vacuum leak, but a bad DPFE sensor. A replacement costs about $112 at Ford, or about $48 at an aftermarket auto parts store.I hope this helps.
