If you are talking about the speed sensor that sends to the ecm and speedometer it is located on the driver side of the transmission near where the driveshaft exits the trans...park on a steep hill pointing down or you will loose alot of fluid during replacement.

Location of speed sensor 96 Jeep Cherokee

which one?
if the rear transmission, it just is a conn, and 1 screw.
a 96 -2006 sure.
42RE transmission or what? there are 2.
why not post the DTC error so we can be on the same page,?
page 191 covers it here , under tranny

some cars have up to 4 speed sensors, 2 on engine and 2 in tranny.
so... guessing page p191 tail
there is also a backup sensor for that. so.....
post DTC error and WIN, speed sensors means zero.
my guys is net rumor told you trans shifts bad and is VSS bad?
or did you scan it and see a live error, DTC,
that be best, not rumors, (and do clean it and retest )

ABS light & brake light on, problems with speedo working properly

The rear wheel speed sensor is the most common problem on those trucks and will do what you are talking about. It is located at the top of the rear axle in the center. It picks up it's signal from a tone ring on the diff inside! If a tranny input or output sensor is bad then the tranny won't shift properly!
