Found this on internet, checking on serviceable areas such as ujoints for mine. Possible answer? A transmission shop said the same thing.

I heard possible u joints, is this possible, drives smooth on accell,
seems trans would ****/downshift/erratic shift if it was trans. Please
help. Any known problems with u joints. veh is 4x4. happens just when
letting off gas on normal driving. 190k miles.

Reply to Auto Tech Guy's Post: when driving on 55mph road and let off gas, hear a
thump noise in rear when set in normal when slowing down/let off gas,
when set in 50% diffriential lock, noise never happens.

Customer (name blocked for privacy),

The
noise you are describing is normal for landcruisers with some miles on
them. The noise is drivetrain backlash, while it may not be in
specification 100%, it is fine to continue driving.
Basically the backlash is all the "slack" that is in your system... starts in the transmission,
then you add in the driveshafts slack, them the rear differentials...
all of that combined equals slack that when you let off the gas "thumps
or clunks".
I believe that your driveshaft is not a rebuilable (checking on this)
type (no servicable u-joints=toyota thing) and replacing just that
probably would not be enough to make it go all away.
For 190k, again, this sounds very normal and will cause you no issues.
I hope this has helped, have a good day.

My 2001 GMC Yukon seems to be stuck in 4 wheel drive. The drive train is binding up when turning on dry pavement. The push button light is on 2hi and the service 4wd light is on. Is there a way to get it...

It may be the front axel actuator moter(on front axel right side) is not disengaging the axel. There is a 4wd
fuse 15amp in the fuse block under the dash, make sure it's not blown. If the fuse is ok, check the connections at the actuator and the transfer case switch. These are the more common causes for the
problem you have. Give these tests a try and let me
know if you want to go to the next level.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Jeep popping problem

  • A couple of check its.
  • Fuel starvation (filter)
  • Plug wires cross firing. At nightm start the engine and watch the plug wires. If they are cross firing you will srr the arcing between them. It is pretty, but not supposed to be. Wires should not vross or touch each other. More than likely they are due for replacement anyway because insulation is broken down Letting up on the fuel lowers ignition loads. If you change the wires, do a complete tune up, plugs, air And fuel filter. Good luck and chk out the electric show under your hood tonight.
