Question about 1988 Ford Ranger
My son has a 1988 Ford Ranger with the 2.9L V6. Last Sunday it started intermittently running rough, almost stalling, blowing smoke from the exhaust. The "Check Engine" light came on so we checked the code - it was complaining that the exhaust gas oxygen sensor was always reading lean, so we replaced it. Now the engine smokes for alittle bit at startup, runs ok for a while, and then the check engine light comes on for the entire time the engine is on. We checked the codes again, and it's complaining that the PIP (profile ignition pickup) is intermittent to the ECA. The Chilton book says this too, and says to check the wiring harness and the ECA. We checked all the connections we could under the hood and they looked ok. The Chilton book doesn't mention where the PIP is. Can anyone tell me where it is? -- Mike Iglesias Internet: University of California, Irvine phone: 949-824-6926 Office of Academic Computing FAX: 949-824-2069 i have a 88 ford ranger extended cab 2.9motor fuel injected..2 weeks ago it just shut down on us then after 15mins it started back up and started spitting and sputtering really bad when u try to give it gas to go faster..we replaced the distruibtor cap, rotor button, plugs and wires, and coil pack and still no luck..i read that an 02 sensor or map sensor can do that..but how do i know which one is it??..plz help i'm running out of things to do..
The 88 ranger does not have a 0xg. sensor or at least the parts place could not find the parts intheir computer. I also think its the choke stickings. My neighbors truck is doing the same thing, i am currently trying to solve this problem for her.

I actually found a ground wire that was stuck inside of the wire bundle's (the plastic casing surrounding the wires) and fixed it right up
