Question about 1988 Ford Ranger

Ford Ranger problem

My son has a 1988 Ford Ranger with the 2.9L V6. Last Sunday it started intermittently running rough, almost stalling, blowing smoke from the exhaust. The "Check Engine" light came on so we checked the code - it was complaining that the exhaust gas oxygen sensor was always reading lean, so we replaced it. Now the engine smokes for alittle bit at startup, runs ok for a while, and then the check engine light comes on for the entire time the engine is on. We checked the codes again, and it's complaining that the PIP (profile ignition pickup) is intermittent to the ECA. The Chilton book says this too, and says to check the wiring harness and the ECA. We checked all the connections we could under the hood and they looked ok. The Chilton book doesn't mention where the PIP is. Can anyone tell me where it is? -- Mike Iglesias Internet: University of California, Irvine phone: 949-824-6926 Office of Academic Computing FAX: 949-824-2069 i have a 88 ford ranger extended cab 2.9motor fuel injected..2 weeks ago it just shut down on us then after 15mins it started back up and started spitting and sputtering really bad when u try to give it gas to go faster..we replaced the distruibtor cap, rotor button, plugs and wires, and coil pack and still no luck..i read that an 02 sensor or map sensor can do that..but how do i know which one is it??..plz help i'm running out of things to do..

I have an 88 ranger with the 2.9 and it to has been doing the exact same thing yalls have been doing. I have replaced the wires, cap, button, plugs, map sensor, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator and it definitely runs better. Heres the wierd part, I have no issues with the truck running or anything as long as when I start it, the motor is cold. Thats it. I am confident I can travel a full tank of gas, as long as I start it when it is cold. Heres the weird part. If the engine is hot, forget it. I have to feather the gas to get it started then I have to give it throttle if im coasting not in gear to keep it running right. That last for about a few minutes and then just goes away. I forgot to say that everytime I start the truck, wether its cold or hot, the check engine light always comes on at least 3-5 seconds after the vehicle is running. So I'm am going to check the coil, 02 sensor, and the crank sensor and see what happens. I will post my findings on monday for yall to see.

I just did an engine swap on my 87 b2 and now if i start it cold it will run fine, until it warms up a little bit and then it will start to fall flat on its face and die. If i start the truck immediatly after it dies (on its own) it will perk right back up to around 1k idle and sit there fine as if nothing was wrong. i have a new cap, plugs, wires, and rotor currently on it and it didn't change anything. also, if i hold it on the floor while driving in 2nd gear ( or any gear for that matter), it will choke out between 1200 and 2900 rpm's but at 3k rpm's it clears right up and runs like there is no problem. I replaced the coil thingy ON the distributor and it seems to have reduced the problem significantly, however its still having issues

The 88 ranger does not have a 0xg. sensor or at least the parts place could not find the parts intheir computer. I also think its the choke stickings. My neighbors truck is doing the same thing, i am currently trying to solve this problem for her.

Why is it running rich, blowing black smoke, and idling roughly?

This problem could be caused by a large number of faults. Clogged air cleaner, bad spark plugs or wiring, choke not opening (If this motor has a choke), oxygen sensor bad just to list a few possible problems.

2.8 v6 ford ranger runs rough at a idle how do I fix this

Being an 85, I would start by replacing all the vacuum lines and fittings, along with the pcv valve. Next would be a tune up, clean the throttle/carb and a fuel and air filter.

Why does my 1988 ford ranger 2.0L is running rough and missing and blowing black smoke

Sounds like it is running rich, could be a stuck injector or a bad water temperature sensor. Is the check engine light on?

88 ranger 2.3L 2wd ext. cab have to start repeatedly and then jerks and stalls

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only genuine items as non-genuine replacement are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units. Look for position sensor with intermittent fault. Check all wire connectors for loose or dirty.

You may need a wiring diagram for the engine.
Unplugging the regulator turns off the alternator which should not affect the ignition system. Unless it is over charging somehow. Or the alternator load on the engine is causing a missfire to be worse.
Its possible you have a ground problem somewhere too.
