The factory hoses for the 2001 Kia sportage that lock the front hubs have a tendency to dry out crack and fall apart. It's worth a little extra time to cut your own with a better grade of hose. I think there are vacum hoses on both the left and right side of the front wheel wells you have to remove the wheels to check. Check to see if there are intact or damaged if they are replace the with the same size hose. Let me know if that helped.
On small shift behinde gear lever there is 3 settings. H4 = 4 wheel drive high range, L4 = 4 wheel drive low range, h2 = 2 wheel drive high range. as soon as jou engage to 4 wheel drive a green light on the dash board will appear to indicate that the car is in 4 wheel drive. if not check fuse - check air pipes at front wheels. Enjoy Willem Sa
if this is a push button 4 wheel drive you need to find out if the actuator on the transfer case is working, if not check the voltage to the actuator and make sure it is getting a signal if it is then change out the actuator, if it isn't then you need to case back to the fuse and relay make sure those are good and then last the button...
good luck
fuses relays in engine compartment or in dash board . look at transfer case look for vacuum lines or electric lines.its probably electric. because most 4 wheel drive uses electric motors.99 up to 2009s model.
it is the vacuum hubs they plain and simple ****...replace the lines. or get manual hubs from warn. the manual hubs are your best bet and only cost around 130 for something you know will work
Sportages uses a vacuum system to lock front hubs - turn the wheels all the way to one side, then look from behind the wheel on the side you are turning 'from" There should be a rubber hose from the vacuum fitting near the wheel opening from the engine compartment to the wheel itself. If these are damages or disconnected, the front axles will engage into 4wd but the hubs will not lock and the front wheels will not be driven by the axles.
I got ripped off by a dealer with a similar problem that came back two weeks later. $2.99 of vacuum hose later I fixed it myself. Check all the vacuum lines for rotted hoses before you fork out 3K and they are easy to do
