I just changed mine. Driver side under the cover. You need a 1.25 socket to remove the top of the canister.

If you have been under the car at the rear it is surprising that you could not locate it. Purchase the correct tool (as shown in the photos) for the cannister removal before you attempt to replace the oil filter.

Where is the oil filter

Hello,

The fuel filter is attached to a bracket located in the left rear of the engine compartment. Look down in the space between the master cylinder fluid reservoir and the rear of the air filter compartment, you will be looking at the top of the fuel filter cannister. It's very hard to get at.

Take care.

Where is oil plug and filter located

Actually in retrospect I should have known exactly where it was located, facing the engine filter is located on right side towards the middle. it is a cannister with a aluminum cap and it has to screwed counter clockwise and it is very tight 15/16 socket or wrench and drain plug is on bottom in the middle , it is hidden and you have to really look for it.

open your bonnet or hood look to the right hand side of the head at the front and you should see a metal cannister with and nut head ontop of it undo the nut and lift off the cannister and there will be a papper filter inside depending on what motor you have you may have to remove the thermostat housing just above the filter housing

Sir,could you tell me where the oil filter is located on a 1998 (S plate) manual saloon 5 series bmw

Ahhhhhh easy one. The oil filter cannister is located not below the engine but in that aluminum looking cannister on the left as you look at the motor from the top.

There's a cap with a nut looking thing holding it all together. undo the nut take off the cap and voila....there's the oil filter. Be sure you pay attention on how it goes together. there are two O-rings and a copper gasket to put back correctly.

Who wants oil spewing out of the oil filter cannister assembly when you're driving down the road and the oil is under 35 psi? Not you, because it will ruin your engine pronto.

Open hood and stand at driverside fender. Look at oil cap and then 6 inches to rear of cap to see a silver cap with 24mm nut slightly below plastic next to engine. Unscrew cannister cap and lift out.

Can't locate the oil filter

The ION doesn't use a conventional screw-on "cannister" filter - instead it uses a paper filter which is more expensive (surprise), and which is housed near the engine block UNDER that plastic hood which covers your engine. In addition, you need a 1 1/4 inch wrench to remove the oil filter cover... sucks, doesn't it?

Depends if the engine is 3.0 or a 2.2?
3.0 purge is on the top, back side of the intake. Black, cylinder. Looks the same on a 2.2, but is located next to the air filter.
