Question about Oldsmobile Bravada

1994 Bravada 4.3 won't start

Hi guys:

I have a 1994 Bravada 4.3 CPI Engine - Vin W, 135,000 miles on it. I own the car about 4 and a half years and is used mainly as a 2nd car and in winters. (4 wheel drive vehicle) About 3 months ago I was driving from Pa to NY, about 120 miles each way. It is mainly highway driving. I was near my destination on the highway, when it stalled out on me. I pulled over and it started right up. Then after I got off the highway, it started to stall out by every light and stop sign, and again it started right up each time.

On my way back home about 6 hours later, again it was doing the same thing. Once I got to the highway it ran fine for a about 105 miles. Once I got to my exit on the highway and got off, the car stalled out again. This time it would not start up. So I had it towed back to my house. The next day it started right up. I shut it off and I went to buy new spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, ignition coil, PCV valve, and fuel filter. I had the fuel pump changed in May of 2005 (about 15,000 miles ago) The fuel pressure is 58 with IOEO. It still does not start. I do not have any engine light on.

I went to a salvage yard where you pull your own parts. I got a used Map sensor, IAC sensor, TPS sensor, EGR valve, CPI unit and a computer. It was from a vehicle that was in an accident. I changed parts one at a time. It still won't start. I checked the oil, I do smell gas in it. I know that means that there is a leak somewhere. I'm not sure what that means nor how to look for that?

I also read in your posts that it could be the Crankshaft Position Sensor. I have the Haynes repair manual and it does not mention anything about it. Can any one please tell me where it is and be specific about it and is it hard to change? Can someone also tell me if you could start the car with the Air intake plenum off the car, or does it have to be on and under pressure?

Thanks for all your help.
George

    Dear Accordianman:

I changed the entire CPI unit with a used one from a car that was in an accident from a salvage yard. Car still won't start. Then I put my old CPI unit back in, and just replaced the fuel injector. Still car won't start. Any other ideas?

Check for a leaking fuel injector. It could be desperately flooding the engine under certain conditions...accordianman

Thermostat housing blew out 2 days after being flushed by dealership,I have already fixed but is this a common thing or is the dealership holding out for much bigger problems to come by chance history?

Go to a site called "Eric the Car Guy" if you have a 4.6L V-8 engine.
I own 2 engines like this and was surprised about photos and evidence presented. Also try AboutAutomobiles.com and enter your Year and Model for TSB's and owner concerns.

For the 4.6L, at about 135,000 Miles, the intake crumbles and leaks in the front around the thermostat.

Fig. 3.1L (VIN M) Engine Firing Order: 1-2-3-4-5-6 Distributorless Ignition System.

One can verify that this Firing Order Diagram applies to your 1994 Grand Am, by making sure that the 8th digit of VIN is "M" (for this 6-cyl 3.1L engine type), and the 10th digit of VIN is "R" (for model year 1994).

I recently bought a 1994 honda civic, the intake got stolen and im having a hard time figuring out my car's engine size (number wore off) and i have no clue what kind of intake I should order online....

Hi Hannah, Your engine size should be listed on the emission sticker(on the hood or front radiator support, and its listed within the V.I.N.(vehicle identification number) the 6th digit of the VIN is your engine size. Here is a conversion for that year: "9"=1.6LiterVtec "8"=1.5Liter "6"=1.6LiterVtec "3"=1.6LiterVtec Below are pictures of your VIN and emission sticker.

Hi and thank you for using fixya:

I would like to start by asking you several questions:

1-how many miles on the car?
2-is the car smoking through the tailpipe?

If the car is smoking there is a possibility of having bad piston rings although it is very rare for the gas to pass down the cylinder.

Know if my 95 chevy blazer has a spider CPI?

A spider injector is located underneath the intake plenum and this is multi-port. Otherwise you have a throttle body injector system. Vortec engines have spider injectors and they are super expensive to replace ($400.00- 850.00) each ! There is only one spider injector for each engine it has 6 legs/fuel tubes that go to each cylinder.
