I have the same exact problem. This happened a couple of months ago, and we traced it to a washer-like rubber disk with a stem attached that is in the same area as the switch. We are having the same problem, and the rubber stem has broken off of the rubber washer/disk. I don't know what it's called, and I'd like to purchase another one.

For a temporary fix, buy a swan switch. I got one for a ford truck. It attaches to one of the battery terminals. Turn the knob off when you shut off the car. Turn it back on when you want to start up. This prevents a vampire electricity thief from wearing down your battery. A swan switch costs about $10 to $20. I got mine at Walmarts.

Brake lights refuse to turn off.

Your brake light switch is stuck. It is located on the brake pedal and they will do this sometimes. You can replace this part for relatively cheap and it doesn't take very long. The other option is to spray it with some WD-40 and try to work it out. Do one of these two things and you will be good to go. Let me know if you have any other questions. Brake lights stay on

It's probably a stuck brake light switch. Look around the brake pedal for the switch -- it could be dirty or broken or loose from its mount and jammed against something.

You have a brake light switch on your brake pedal. First check to see that the switch is closing when the pedal is off. Then check your light bulbs and fuses for the tail lights.
