I have a 1996 VW Jetta that did that. I would take the key out of the igniton and the radio would keep playing. I could even get out of the car and lock it from the outside and the radio would keep playing.

Now the problem has changed. Now the radio will turn of when I start my car and not work at all.

I have the same problem. My radio has completely stopped working at this point. It actually started going haywire after a bigger friend of mine drove the car... not sure if that had somehow jostled the connection between the radio and ignition switch. My mechanic said I can either replace my ignition switch for about $150 since that's what powers the radio, or I can remove the radio and hook it up to a different power source, the cig lighter for example. I am much more interested in option 2 (the free one) but don't know how to go about removing the radio. Do I need special tools? Thanks!

Some cars allow power to the radio, etc. even after the key is turned off and taken out of the ignition. If everything turns off when the door opens, then it is most likely normal for your car. I know the newer VW Jetta's do this.

I need help! I have a 1996 vw Jetta! Wont start and wont crank! Dash lights come on but when I turn the key nothing happens! What should I check?

I would check to see if you are getting power to the small wire on the starter solenoid when you turn the key to the starting postion. If you do, the starter is bad. If not, you probably have a bad ignition switch.

2006 vw jetta ..last week the radio wouldnt turn off when i took the key out of the ignition, now this morning when i unlocked the door all the windows rolled down by their selves and then it died while...

put the key in the drivers door and unlock/hold key over see what happens....
then lock car with key/hold over, and see what happens again .....magic aint it....
the radio can be set to stay on or go off with the key,you control it....
NOW the car dying when going down the road is something that needs looking into, check codes to find fault.......

My stock radio wont turn off after key is out in my 2003 VW Jetta

It may be a short in the door sensor itself. You can always remove the bulb for the time being. Otherwise, wires, relays, and door senor will have to be tested for short or open circuit.

1996 VW Jetta Trek Radio won't work

I have this same issue, it is not code related, I have a code and the radio works just fine WHEN THE CAR IS OFF. As soon as the engine starts, the radio loses power, did you ever find a solution to this?
