Question about 2004 Buick Rainier

2004 BUICK RAINIER

There is a loud thud and associated jolt (like a parking lot hit) coming from the rear. Maybe something to do with the suspension? it has a self-levelling suspension. Or -- could be other cause - don't know! It is intermitent - and can't get the vehicle to fault at the service dep't.

Is this normal self-levelling going on? or some other problem?

You are not alone. Mine does it too. And of course - the service department can't get it to duplicate. I need help on this one too!!!

I have same problem recently dealer replaced a sensor in transmission and didn't fix it. Now their talking about rebuilding or replacing rearend differential, which could cost $1000's.

We have had the same problem. Going around a corner once, it sounded and felt like the entire undercarriage was going to fall off. Throughout the past two years the service dept has never been able to identify the problem and say no one else has complained of a similar problem.

I have the same problem as you all....the thump and then mine actually pulls violently to the right. I have had the transmission and rear sway bars replaced and it still does it. It's at the dealership right now and they are saying they don't feel it and no one else has had this issue. Someone please help us. I just bought this thing!

I also have the same problem. As I am driving you can hear a light thumping in the back. I also thought it was the self leveling mechanism, but am finding out others have the same issue. My all wheel drive light is now on, so if anyone could help out that would be great. Or point us in the right direction.

I have the same problem with my 2005 Buick Rainier. Whenever I am sitting still with the brake on, like at a red light, it jolts from the rear a few times. I've taken it to the dealer and they "can't replicate my concern". I am starting to think I should just sell it and buy something else as I am getting tired of wasting my time at the dealer to end up looking like a women who doesn't know what she's talking about. My husband said it could be the catalytic converter, but the engine temp. is fine. I think it's electrical and has to do with the All-Wheel-Drive.

I have the same problem with my 2004 Rainier. It has to do with the drive shaft and a broken seal. It needs to be lubed.

These are side products of the all wheel drive system, incombo with the locking rear dfferentials.

You'll find the auto-lockers will tend to do that following a tight turn, particularly when you're doing it quickly.

The thud is similar in nature; it's just the All wheel system trying to figure out where to put the power.

I had the same problem, with my 2004 Rainier. It would thud, crack like h_ll in the rearend, when turning or leaving a light. I replaced the motor in the transfercase, it wasn't unlocking all the way from 4 wheel drive. It fixed my problem

This is the air compressor in the rear which helps to stabilize the rear suspension.

Loud thud when i hit a bump. car wobbles going over 60 mph. any ideas?

I think that is somewhat obvious
You stop using a vehicle that wobbles
at any speed just from a safety perspective
There has to be something worn or loose under
the front suspension & possible even the rear
If you never work on or have vehicle experience then
know the shops you have used for most of your life

2004 Buick Rainier has shuddering and grinding sound when backing. Started after recent alignment (shop said they had problems with aligning, I heard them beating on something). A leak under the front end...

take it back and ask them to see what has gone wrong .its down to their mishandling ,steering should never need re aligning unless the ball joints are worn causing it ,do you have a annual vehicle mechanical inspection in your area?? lights brakes emmisions and inspection over a pit with metals plates shaking the suspension ??,also conformity to the certificate of homoglonation ??

I have a 2004 buick rainier with a sagging rear suspension self levelors not working?

The suspension levelors are vaucumn controlled, look for a leak in the vacumn lines and the levelors, sometimes to ease up your search you may use a spray solution of soapy water while the system is engaged to try to pin point the source of the leak.
Kinked, twisted, pinched or broken vacumn hoses are a straight forward sure sign of the problem repair/replace the defect and recheck your work to be sure it is repaired properly after the fix.

When my 2004 Ranier is idling sometimes I hear a 'thud'

Possibly 2 conditions at once. If it is sitting at an idle and you hear the thud noise, it very well depends on where you are hearing it but it almost sounds to me like maybe occasionally the is backfiring.I would personally if this is the case, Take air filter housing away from the motor and check the throttle body for a buildup, check air filter, and try some fuel treatment. If you have no check engine light it is not mis firing, but it could be exhaust related.

Wheels locking up when turning sharply left or right

Could be one of several problems in the rear diff.
It depends if its the optional locking rear diff and it's stuck locked, or it is the limited slip and something inside caused it to lock.

See a mechanic before you do more damage.

go to an independant mechanic.a dealership will try to tell you things are wrong that arent and that you need to fix this or that while they have it there and then want to charge you 70 dollars an hour for the time they spend working on it.
