A/c Does Not Work

The air conditioning compressor will not start thus resulting in no cold air into vehicle. What is the probable cause of the compressor not coming on. Thanks

Most likely the cause is low freon charge. Contrary to popular belief, an A/C system never 'loses' freon normally - this always means a leak but sometimes the leak can be so small that it is virtually undetectable.
Your A/C system has a 'low pressure' switch, usually mounted on the compressor, that shuts the compressor down to prevent damage when the freon's psi falls too low. To test your compessor: with the engine running you'll need to connect a wire to the positive battery terminal and one side of the switch and just touch another wire from the negative battery terminal to the other side.
If the compressor is OK, the clutch 'plate' will engage & spin when both wires are connected. Either way, you should have this done at a licensed garage as you probably don't have the proper tool to test & repair the system if you do find the problem.
If you decide to do this yourself, please be very, very careful not to get shocked (use thick wires with good insulation) and don't wear long sleeves or loose clothing as you will be working right near the spinning pulleys and belt(s). Good Luck!

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the splash guard on the right side of the vehicle.
  3. Loosen the alternator belt idler pulley.
  4. Slip the drive belt off the alternator pulley.
  5. Remove the four air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Remove the radiator fan and fan shroud.
  7. Move the air conditioning compressor forward.
  8. Disconnect the alternator harness connector.
  9. Remove the alternator mounting bolts, and lower the alternator from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Hold the alternator in place and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Plug in the alternator harness connector.
  3. Move the air conditioning compressor back into location.
  4. Install the radiator cooling fan and shroud.
  5. Install the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Place the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
  7. Tighten the drive belt to the proper tension with the idler pulley.
  8. Install the splash guard.
  9. Connect the negative battery terminal.
Proper belt tension is important. A belt that is too tight may cause alternator bearing failure; one that is too loose will cause a gradual battery discharge and/or belt slippage, resulting in belt breakage from overheating.

Tips for operating Air conditioning system on Toyota Hilux and someother...


To cool off your Toyota after it has been parked in the hot sun, drive with the windows open for a few minutes. This vents the hot air, allowing the air conditioning to cool the interior more quickly.

Make sure the air intake grilles in front of the windshield are not blocked (by leaves or snow, for example).

On humid, do not blow cold air on the windshield. The windshield could fog up because of the difference in air temperature on the inside and outside of the windshield.

Keep the area under the front seats clear to allow air to circulate throughout the vehicle.

On cold days, set the fan speed to high for a minute to help clear the intake ducts of snow or moisture. This can reduce the amount of fogging on the windows.

When driving on dusty roads, close all windows. If dust thrown up b the vehicle is still drawn into the vehicle after closing the windows, it is recommended that the in intake be set to FRESH and the fan speed to any setting except "OFF".

If following another vehicle on a dusty road, or driving in windy and dusty conditions, it is recommended that the air intake be temporarily set to RECIRCULATE, which will close off the outside passage and prevent outside air and dust from entering the vehicle interior.

HEATING

For best results, set controls to;
Fan speed ---- Any setting except "OFF"
Temperature----Towards WARM (red zone)
Air intake ---- FRESH (outside air)
Air flow ---- FLOOR
Air conditioning ---- OFF

For quick heating, select recirculated air for a few minutes. To keep the windows from fogging, select fresh after the vehicle has been warmed.

Press the "A/C" button on for dehumidified heating.

Choose floor/windshield air flow to heat the voltage interior while defrosting or defogging the windshield.

AIR CONDITIONING

For best results, set controls to;

A/C Cluch Spinning, Fluid Full, but No Cold Air


Many A/C compressors rely on a computer generated reset of data to perform properly. Check the gauges, while attempting to energize the system to see if the fluids are up to the proper levels. Too much pressure can also be caused by a blockage in the lines and thus leaking from the valves. When filling with Freon, it is important to do a full Vacuum of the system to prevent air locks, and false readings on the gauges.

A/C is weak


I am not an automotive air conditioning expert, but generically speaking the common cause of weak cooling is loss of the cooling gas, compressor becoming weak, or a defective control valve; in that order. Most of the time in air conditioning systems they make a slow leak and eventually loose the cooling gas (freon).

Automobiles are ******* the air conditioning system because of the roughness they have to endure with bumps, jarring around, and severe conditions.

A common type of problem is the condenser leaking. The condenser becomes very humid all the time due to it being cold. The humidity promotes corrosion in its piping.

The air conditioning service person will put in the gas with an ultraviolet dye, run the system for a while, and then examine the system using an ultra violet lamp. He will be able to see where the leaks are occurring and thus give an estimate for the parts that must be replaced.

If you have an older vehicle, the air conditioning system can end up being rather expensive to service. With some of the common type faults don't be surprised if repairs can go in to a number of thousands of dollars, unless you are luck and the fault is a simple seal or gasket.

Let me explain in layman's terms how the air conditioning (AC) system works and what could be happening to your car.

Like your body, the air conditioning compressor is the heart of the AC system, and Freon is the blood. The compressor pumps Freon throughout the AC system, either the older type R12 which costs as much as gold it seems these days, or the new environmentally-friendly R134A Freon. This Freon is a gas and liquid combination that is compressed and circulated throughout the air conditioning system. The compressed Freon is pushed through the system under pressure and is passed through different sized metal and rubber hoses and a special valve called an expansion valve that cause the gas to expand and contract.

This expansion and contraction makes the Freon gas very cold. This cold gas makes its way via metal lines into the dash area of your vehicle to the evaporator core. This evaporator core is like a small radiator, except it has cold Freon circulating inside and not hot antifreeze. A small fan (the AC blower fan which you control from the control panel on the dash) sits in front of the evaporator core and blows air across this cold evaporator and then through the vents inside your vehicle.

The other objective of the air conditioning system is to remove the heat from inside the cab of the vehicle. This heat is removed by the Freon with the help of the AC condenser located at the front of the car (usually in front of the radiator). The Freon coming back from the evaporator carries the heat from the cab to the condenser via rubber and metal hoses. Just like your radiator, the condenser is lightweight aluminum with many internal winding coils.
The Freon travels through these coils, and in between these coils are small slits or fins that the Freon is forced through. The condenser will have an electric cooling fan mounted in front or behind it to push or pull air through these fins to remove the heat from the Freon. Some vehicles still use the old fashioned fan blade driven by the engine to pull air across the radiator and the condenser.
Now I know that is just a tidbit of information on how the air conditioning system works, and it is very general, but I wanted you to know what to look for to give you insight as to what might be happening with your vehicle.
A few causes of low cooling efficiency or no cooling at all at idle are:

Lack of air flow across the condenser. Make sure the electric cooling fan motor near the condenser is coming on, or in models that are equipped with a fan blade make sure this fan is turning and is turning very fast.

Low Freon levels. Freon level and pressure should be checked by your certified air conditioning mechanic.

Overheating. If the engine is running hot or overheating, it can have a noticeable negative affect on the air conditioning system. Some cars have two electric cooling fans, one for the air conditioning condenser and the other for the radiator. Make sure they are both working properly. Usually at idle on a hot day with the AC on both fans will be on.

When the vehicle is traveling at freeway speeds, the compressor is pumping the Freon throughout the system much faster and harder than at idle. There is a dramatic increase in air flow across the condenser due to 55 mph winds, and the engine is usually operating at a cooler, more efficient temperature as well, thus allowing the air conditioning system to operate efficiently.
Note: An air conditioning system that is somewhat low on Freon can still feel comfortable at freeway speeds due to the added air flow across the condenser which can overcome the ill effects of slightly low Freon. Periodic air conditioning performance checks by your mechanic are the best way to keep the system in great shape.

either a switch is bad or a electrical operated door failed within the duct work. . This vehicle has the abililty to set a code for this condition and only the dealer and some shops have the diagnostic equipment to diagnose this cortectly the first time.

the air compressor is probably bad, there are companies that sell kits to eleminate the compressors and air bags with springs. I have used a few and they work ok.

The air conditioning in my 2008 Buick LaCrosse does not work.


Need clarification...
Does the compressor run steady, cycle on and off continually or even come on at all? If cycles on-off then attach charge manifold/gauge set and bring freon up to proper level. If does not come on at all, then start engine, turn a/c on, remove two-wire plug from low pressure cut-out switch mounted on accumulator. Jumper the wires at plug and see if compressor comes on. If so, bring freon up to proper level.

If charge level was low then check for system leak after system charge with an electronic leak detector if available.

If compressor runs but doesn't cool vehicle then with engine running and a/c on feel (carefully) the lines. High side line should be hot (be careful) and low side line should be cold. If these are both true then it's possible non-cooling condition is due to air temp diverter door not operating or heater valve not shutting off (if so equipped). If low side not cold it could be a plugged orifice tube. If high side not hot it could be bad rings on compressor. Both conditions can be diagnosed with a/c manifold gauge set by noting the pressures.

For safety... if not familiar with differences between hi and low side components or with charge equipment then please take vehicle to qualified person for service.

When i activate the air condition the engine meter, goes up and down.


The "Tachometer" is the gauge that indicates the engine RPM. It is not unusual for the idling RPM to drop slightly when the air conditioner comes on. The air conditioner represents a fairly large load on the engine so when it starts, the RPM will drop slightly. When driving, you'll probably not even notice that the air conditioning is a load on the engine unless you're accelerating uphill, pulling a trailer or passing another vehicle while the vehicle is fully loaded. At idle, the Envoy's computer should detect the falling RPM and make adjustments in fuel delivery to bring the RPM back up.

In any case, it shouldn't be cause for alarm, unless the air conditioner is stalling the engine. If this is the case, you are probably in need of service. The issue of low cooling from the air conditioner while idling in gear (as is the case when stopped in traffic, etc.) is correctable free of charge at the dealership on certain vehicles as a result of a recall. Your dealer can tell you if your vehicle is affected or if there is other recall work pending on your vehicle based on the VIN.
