Question about Saturn SL1

1 Answer

1997 Saturn SL1 standard with almost 127,000 miles. It seems like it is starving for gas. I have looked at the air filter, it is fine. I put fuel injection cleaner in the fuel tank. What else should I do? Kimberly Hoyt

Should I also check the plugs and the Fuel filter, and cat converter?

  • khoyt Jul 22, 2008

There was no engine codes, because the lights never came on.

We changed the plugs first and it still was doing the same thing (bucking no rpm's and starving for gas) and then we changed the fuel filter and it seems that did the trick.

Thank you for your input it was very helpful.

i think i miss read your probleme ... is the engine running rough? if so, the basic thing to do is to change plugs and wires

  • clodam Jul 21, 2008

you can also take off the o2 sensor before the cat, if it runs better the the cat is clogged, you are also due to change the gaz filter if it's never been done...

1997 Saturn SL can't get it started Have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, CPS sensor and coolant sensor.

Im not sure if this will completely solve your problem, but I will give it a try.

If the engine is flooded, crank the engine while holding the gas pedal to the floor for a couple minutes (or until it sputters or starts). This will get all of the extra gas out of the engine. Your plugs will be fine.

Check your fuel pressure with a test kit...they have a bleeder port that can purge the air out of the fuel rail. Its possible the old gas may have gone bad in 6 years. you may have to purge the old gas with fresh gas. couldnt hurt to put a couple bottles of fuel injector cleaner with your gas. Your injectors could be gummed up with varnish from the old gas.

Before you waste a bunch of money and time replacing good parts, get a code reader or have a mechanic hook up a code reader for you. This will help isolate your problems. If you are not getting a check engine light, the mechanic method may be better because their computers will give you more information than a handheld.

I have a 1997 Saturn SL1. It was running fine during the colder months but now that it is warm doesn't really run at all. I can start it up when it has been sitting for a while drive a few miles but...

1. Start the car and let it run until it reaches operating temperture.
2. Feel the top radiator hose. If the engine is warm, but the top radiator hose is not, the thermostat is stuck closed. Replace it. (be sure to ask for a thermostat housing gasket when purchasing thermostat).
3. If this does not correct the problem:
a. replace both the air and fuel filter b. add one bottle of Sea Foam Fuel Additive (auto parts store will have it) to full tank of fresh gas (add before fueling).
It is also a good idea to perform a routine tune-up which inlcudes the above as well as:
1. spark plugs and spark plug wires 2. distributor cap and rotor (if equipped) (otherwise you'll have coil packs) 3. change both transmission fluid and oil (with filters and gaskets) 4. air filter and fuel filter
If the problem persists, have a diagnostics test performed by a techinician and consider the following repairs/replacement:
1. MAS - mass airflow sensor 2. crank shaft sensor 3. cam shaft sensor 4. O2 Sensor(s)

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

My 92 saturn sl burns through gas way too fast. I barely make it 30 miles without having to fill up again. What do i need to do to get better gas mileage?

Need some more info. How much gas are you putting in it? Does it smell like raw gas at anytime? Under the hood or under the car? Possible broken (rusted) fuel line. Any service engine lights on? Does the car seem to run well?

Fowling plugs for a 1997 saturn sl1

I would check the fuel pressure regulator, make sure it is getting vacuum going to it. Also check the air filter. Could be dirty. Any engine codes?

Car starts and runs for about 10-15 seconds and then stops, seems to be starving for gas. Is this a fuel filter, if so where are filters located??

it sounds as if your fuel pump is bad. depending on how many miles you have on the car, the fuel filter may be clogged. this is usually located along the back of frame rail, usually on the right hand side. replacing this is the cheapest and quickest fix. most people tend to forget the fuel filter, and i've seen cars with over hundred thousand miles and still have the original filter.

97 sl1 started stalling when 1/4 tank of gas now stalls at 3/4 tank replaced fuel pump and filter/regulator twice runs great when full

It seems that cap of the tank is not letting in air to replace the volume consumed by the engine. Earlier, when it used to stall when1/4 full, there must been less blockage of air but now the air inlet must be really clogged-up,so much so that after being emptied 1/4 of fuel, the negative pressure built up inside the tank is enough to negate the fuel pumps capacity & without gas it will stall the engine which is being deprived of fuel.
One way to make sure that this IS the problem, fill the tank half, do not put the cap try a drive at least for 5 miles & if the engine does not stall, then one can be sure that he cap of the gas tank has to be replaced............sodeep
