Question about Jaguar XJ8
Likely interlock solenoid. Remove cover around shift lever, remove wood trim to get access to solenoid. To check solenoid operation: Engine running, foot on brake, should be volts on solenoid. If not control problem from gearbox control unit (main dealer for diagnosis). If volts, and solenoid not working, replace solenoid. Sometimes can be a mechanical problem and solenoid is jammed against shift lever - just free it, adjust and everything is then OK.

SOURCE: 2004 cavalier shift lever stuck
To check this out you must remove the shift handle by using a butter knife to remove a horseshoe clip facing the very front of the handles shank. Then remove the shifter plate to check the cables

Tips for a great answer:

If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease the pressure on the shift lever. Push the shift lever all the way into PARK (P) as you maintain brake application. Then move the shift lever into the gear you want. If you are still having a problem shifting, then have your vehicle serviced soon.
