I have a 2005 F250 5.4 Liter gas engine which has 60000 on it. Driving home from work Friday the truck stareted acted up on me, the service engine soon light came on and it started blowing white smoke out of the tail pipe. The smoke smells like fuel. After taking it to the local Auto Zone the computer said that the No. 5 Cylinder was misfiring. After changing the Coil on that specific cylinder as well as changing the plugs problem still exists. can you give me a sence of direction on this problem?

I would run a compression test on #5 to verify that the head gasket is not blown. White smoke is not good and water will cause a misfire.

SOURCE: I have a code misfire cylinder 5 and I am not sure

Cylinder numbering for your engine is 1-3-5-7 on the left hand bank and 2-4-6-8 on the right hand bank (passenger side). To be sure where number 1 is look across the cylinder heads number 1 cylinder is always the head that is furthest ahead towards the front of the vehiclek, then count 3 cylinders back on that side, should be left, and that should be number 5. pull the spark plug first and check it and at the same time pull number 3 's plug and swap the coils from 5 to 3. If the plugs are bad replace them all. Then run the vehicle and see if the misfire code followed the coil to number 3, if it does you know you have a bad coil, they usually run about 90 - 100 bucks each, that is if the plugs or wire wasn't the problem. hope this will help you. good luck.

sounds like the head or head gasket is blown. your cylinders may be getting coolant in them which will not only cause the motor to lockup, but also cause bent rods and valves. check your oil dipstick and transmission dipstick to see if it looks like water or coolant is presant, also check the coolant to see if it smells like gas or has any kind of oil in it, if so, your head is likely blown.

Hi I have a similar problem with my dodge ram 1500 1995 it was cutting off every 2-3 hrs in hard driving then it was getting worse and yes it sound like it was getting a lot of air in the intake finally I found a bad fuel pump inside engine compartment is a valve in the gas line where you can check the gas pressure and see if you have the same problem every time I was driving on the freeway I have to be easy on the gas or it will start complaining making this air sound and feel like dead then if I release the gas it will run again but I have to know how much gas and how fast can I go and for how long specially in the freeway so try and see if you have the same problem with the fuel pump
