I have a '97 jetta and I pretty much have the same problem, my driver side door will not unlock when i use the key in the lock, but it will unlock if i use the key in the passenger side lock, or the console lock controls.

I had the same problem with the driver's side lock not working so for a while I was just using the passenger's side lock - then that broke too.

I have a '98 jetta and the only lock is on the drivers side and the trunk, they key will go in the lock but will not unlock, like it is jammed or something it wont turn. If i try the trunk, the alarm will go off, so i have no car to use now.

Passenger door lock spins and will not lock the car. Removing the door handle with allen wrench I can see where a casting seems to be broken. There must be a hook that holds that in place and I think it has broken off. Need a break down of the door.

I HAD THE SAME ISSUE, IF YOU CALL THE DEALERSHIP "PARTS DEPARTMENT" - THE WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT PARTS YOU NEED. IN FACT, THIS DOOR ISSUE COMES UP SO OFTEN, THAT VW RELEASED AN A REINFORCED "UPGRADED" HOOK MECHANISM. PARTS ABOUT $50.00 & IF YOU TAKE IT TO ANY LEGIT BODY SHOP, THEY WILL INSTALL IT FOR ABOUT $70.00. (NOTE: DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THIS YOURSELF, UN LESS YOU KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND LOCKS!)

I turn the key and the alarm goes off

It sounds like your key is no longer programmed for your car, or your key battery is dead. First, try replacing the battery in the key. If that doesn't work you'll need to get the key reprogrammed from the dealer. To replace the battery:
Open the key. In the groove where the key is stored there is a seam. Pry with a flat head screw driver. The front half and back half will separate. It doesn't come apart easy, usually takes a bit of prying. Then, take the button end and the back part, and pull up at the seam. Start in the front and once it opens a little- try prying with a finger nail around the edges. Replace the battery with CR2032 - 3 vdc - Positive + side down. Hope that helps.

Driver side door lock won't open or lock using remote.

if it moves even a little bit when the button is pushed it wont be a fuse issue, you more than likely have a weak door lock actuator

The driver side door lock wont go all the way up.

The outside door handle spring is broke ,or the latch spring is broke. The only way to tell is remove the door panel and inspect the rod from the handle to latch. Look for broken spring on handle. I have installed an external spring from the handle rod to latch to keep the rod in the full up position.

Side door lock on 2000 VW Beetle

the dealer gave you a ignition key, instead of valet key.
valet key should open the driver door and ignition. nothing else. if the key can't ope the door. try the trunk. if it open the trunk, the it is a wrong key.

The driver side door lock broke on my 98 jetta door want open

according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also
