I have a 2000 Ford focus 1.8 petrol car with 90,000 on clock. In the last few weeks it's become very spluttery and unresponsive when accelerating to overtake. this is obvoiusly dangerous . With a relatively empty fule tank it also refused to get up a local hill until refilled with an extra 7 or 8 litres of fule . Coulkd a faulty fule filter be to blame . or are there a whole range of things it might be . Can a diagnosis be done? the speedo is also periodicall y malfunctionong and droppind off to zero . Any advice on that problem and the likely cost of sorting out these problems?

If the car idles well but sputters when accelerating, this is a sign that the coil is bad. It does resemble a fuel problem, but it is not.

I'd guess: not enough fuel flow. could be a fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel pressure regulator. No check engine codes? I would think there should be some that would help diagnose.

What is the P0420 code on my 2004 toyota tundra

the P0420 CODE IS INSUFFICIENT CATALYTIC FLOW , FIRST CHECK OTHER SENSORS BEFORE REPLACING THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR, CHECK YOU REAR OXYGEN SENSOR TO MAKE SURE IT IS WORKING FINE, THEN CHECK YOUR EGR VALVE, MAKE SURE IT IS NOT LEAKING, CHECK YOU MASS AIR FLOW METER IF IT HAS ONE OR AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR, THIS WILL BE THE TOP OXYGEN SENSOR. IF ALL GOOD THE CAT IS THE PROBLEM, THAT IS THE TOP CAT.

P0136 sensor

this is the oxygen sensor behind the cat ,,,,, may be the sensor or a cat problem ,,,,, this sensor is monitoring the cat ,,,incorect readings will cause the code ,,,, may have a other problem causing code . ie fuel starvation or overfueling,,,,, mass air flow meter or temp sensor.... air leaks , need to look at data list to make sure other sensors are working correctly before changing the oxygen sensor

I have a 1986 gts corrolla that will not run unless air flow meter is held open

Now if your old fuel pump was loosing pressure it tends to lean out Overheating your catalytic converter and melting it so exhaust gasses can't flow To test this is easy just remove the two bolts holding it on the engine pipe Start the engine if runs fine replace cat converter

Ford focus 2002 emission problems. i have changed the CAT and lambda sensor and it still failed MOT. diagnosis check says air flow sensor and MAP sensor. this car has NO air flow meter.

Yes it does its in the air intake ,trying to think where it is as unlike the escort which was in the air filter housing well on the outlet ,unless this vehicle was imported from saudia arabia where no cats were fitted.then it will have one ask in the local ford garage for a new sensor and then you will know what it looks like ,i have worked on no end of these cars and iam sorry but mind is a blank after working all day ,iam sure its underneath the air intake pipe which makes it difficult to see ,damm getting old and old timers setting in

Emmisions control light is on in my car dunno what it is and how much it will cost to get fixed my car runs good in park but when i put it in drive it cughs splatters and stops running

Could be 3 things

1 EGR valve """The EGR valve helps your car more efficiently and completely burn fuel by recirculating a portion of your exhaust and running it through the combustion process again. This results in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel which decreases you car's noxious emissions by prohibiting the formation of some harmful gases.""""

2 The lambda sensor needs replacing although, this does not normally cause the car to splutter.

3 The air mass sensor or air mass meter might be oplaying up, this is located on your air box you can clean them first to see if that fix's it. also check all your air pipes are not split or leaking air.

Air mass meters are also commonly referred to as air flow meters. They measure the mass of the air flowing into the engine. The air mass information is necessary to calculate and deliver the right amount of fuel to the engine, the sensor is the wired part of the system connected to the air mass meter.

First have an exhaust shop check your flow through the catalytic converter. If you have a bad oxygen sensor with no noticable change in fuel economy or performance, it likely is the one after the Cat. This one just measure performance of the Cat. itself. The one in front of Cat is responsible for adjusting fuel mixture, so if it goes bad, you should have fuel consumption, and other symptoms. The best Volvo service is still done at your Volvo dealerships. Good luck, and thanks for posting. TT
