You'll need a few special tools. You will need some common metric wrenches and sockets, 10-19mm will be more than enough, and you'll need an 8mm Allen bit as well, to remove the caliper mounting bolts (these anchor the caliper to the caliper carrier). If you're doing rear brakes, you'll also need the proper tools to screw the calipers back in. If you're doing front brakes, you can use a C-clamp to compress the pistons back in. Other than that, and maybe a big beefy screwdriver to separate the caliper from the carrier, there's nothing to it.

Can i buy one of these special tools for the passat brake caliper and if so about how much are they? also are there any other special things i should know before working on the brakes?

You can buy one but that is not necessary. Advance and Auto Zone will lend you the tools free of charge. Just go there buy your new pads, and ask to borrow the brake caliber tool.

How do you put rear brake pistons back in on a seat toledo 19 tdi 1999

Not sure exactly what you are asking , but, if you need to compress the cylinder so new pads fit , you have to turn and push at the same time. Threads in like a screw , but I cant remember if it is clockwise or counter. I ground down an old 7/8 socket till it had two little teeth on it and presto ( VW special tool # bla bla bla)

Passat 2003 tdi, brake pad change..

Proper size wrenches and a large C-clamp to push piston back into the caliper is only tools for the front, but back disk brakes require special tool to TURN the piston as it is pushed back into caliper to reset emergency brake. This tool can often be borrowed from Auto parts store or purchased from Harbor Freight http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=40732 for about $20. Don't try to service rear disks without the tool, Calipers can be broken if not retracted properly!

I need to replace the rear brakes and rotors on my 2004 Audi A4. Will I need special tools to do this? Can I still do the job without these tools?

'B6' (2001-2004) A4s dont have seperate rotors on the rear brakes like the pre 2001 A4s do. When changing the rear pads + discs the only special tool you will need is a caliper wind back tool. Let me know if you do also need to replace any ABS components aswell as I might be able to advise.

1993 vw passat rear brakes...unable to compress caliper piston? Caliper is off, the new brakes are on but I am unable to get the caliper pistons back far enough to go over the new brake pads.

G clapm and water pump pliers needed, slight compression on G clamp which is on back /piston slight pressure applied then turn the piston with the waterpump pliers ,better with two people one holding it and keeping pressure on G clamp whilst the other turns piston.Yes i know their is a special tool for this and every motor has its own style of tool but mine does all .

My VW 1.9 Passat diesel y reg rear brake pads need changing, Is this an easy job for an average DIY man? Do I need special tools and anythiing to be aware of.

Yes you will need special tools for a rear brake job. you will need a set of xzn wrenches large ones say 12 and up to 18 I believe, and you will need a caliper tool that spins and compresses the caliper at the same time

Rear brake pad installation 99 volkswagen passat can not get the piston to push in ?

I use a "C" clamp & screw it in slowly. If need be, leave cap of reservoir, and/or crack open your bleeder screw. Bleed after install.
