Landrover freelander 2.5 auto 2001

We do not have a manual and have had problems with the auto box. It seems to be sticking in gear and is coming up with f4 error.

I have a simular problem on my 02' freelander it only has 40K miles on it.
There is a long shift lag between 2 to 3 it revs up to 3500 - 4000 rpm before it kicks in hard. In the old days this would have been a slipping band in in automatics usually caused by high mileage or lack of fluid on these new electronic things with no fluid dipstick in sight it is worriesome. I can shift it in the manual sport shift so I know it isn't worn out.

We had a similar problem. I seems to be related to a conflict between the ATC software and the switch which senses the position of the selector lever.
Ours was solved under warranty by the dealer. Despite the fact that apart from the warning in the odometer everything else seemed to be working just fine, they spent a lot of time trying to chase down the problem, which they said was the switch, that had occured for others and been solved by minor adjustments.
The final answer from Land Rover Technical service was to replace the entire transmission and shifter mechanism rather than spent more time (at $100/hr) finding the true cause.
Hopefully your answer is to reset the ATC and be sure to always move the shifter precisely.

not said year could be the cam and crank sensor. also you not said what gear box you have auto or manual. auto its down to having a ecu problem with it being in limp mode. manual it will be the same but more manageable with your onwn gear changes.

Because I have a bad ground wire on my 1996 mercury cougar xr7 V8. Autozone can't scan the computer to see why the check engine light is on. But they told me if I got on line I could find out what pins or...

ground wire ? well that tell you about that autozone... are you lights working ? is the engine run ? then you have a ground wire. if you have a bad ground wire it will cause you lots of problems for one it will just cut out with no lights etc. or flickering lights. easy to fix a ground wire. replace the earth wire from the battery to the shell of the engine bay. 5 min job. now to your problem is it auto or manual auto if it has this problem with 2 to 3 gear its a sticking solenoid in the auto box... it will need replacing. manual it would be the gear gate warn out and will need replacing. also on a auto you will need to check the speed sensor as this tells the auto box to change gear if it is missing a reading it will be sluggish.

I have a problem with my mazda lantis '94. it seems to drive fine when i drive at 50km/h but it slips out of gear all the time. would it be the transmission itself or the sensor?

Hi B,
Is your vehicle automatic or manual? If its automatic start the engine and leave it idling. With the engine running check the gearbox oil level on the transmission dip stick (the one with the red top) and make sure that the fluid level is correct. If not, top up through the same tube where the dip stick fits. Don't over fill. If the fault persists the problem will be inside the gear box with the clutch and drive bands having most likely been damaged. The best and most economical way of fixing the vehicle will be to look for and get a good second hand box and have it fitted.
If its manual there is a probability that the syncro mesh cone has worn out. To repair the box is not very economically viable, so I'd recommend the same as for the auto box. Get a good second hand box and fir that.

I changed fluid in transmission now it's seem to be wineing when going 60 mph or more.

hi, some people do this wrong when checking the fluid in the box, i gather it is an auto box?, when checking correct amount of fluid in an auto box the engine has to be running to get the correct mark on the auto-box dip stick, strange as it seems this is normal to do, unlike engine where it has to be not running, try running engine then check fluid, if lower then max line top up, then run again till you get the correct level if it is a manual gear box, just top up the fluid till it starts running out of the filler plug, that then means its the correct level, but do not run it if manual gear box....hope this helped
