Landrover freelander 2.5 auto 2001

We do not have a manual and have had problems with the auto box. It seems to be sticking in gear and is coming up with f4 error.

I have a simular problem on my 02' freelander it only has 40K miles on it.
There is a long shift lag between 2 to 3 it revs up to 3500 - 4000 rpm before it kicks in hard. In the old days this would have been a slipping band in in automatics usually caused by high mileage or lack of fluid on these new electronic things with no fluid dipstick in sight it is worriesome. I can shift it in the manual sport shift so I know it isn't worn out.

We had a similar problem. I seems to be related to a conflict between the ATC software and the switch which senses the position of the selector lever.
Ours was solved under warranty by the dealer. Despite the fact that apart from the warning in the odometer everything else seemed to be working just fine, they spent a lot of time trying to chase down the problem, which they said was the switch, that had occured for others and been solved by minor adjustments.
The final answer from Land Rover Technical service was to replace the entire transmission and shifter mechanism rather than spent more time (at $100/hr) finding the true cause.
Hopefully your answer is to reset the ATC and be sure to always move the shifter precisely.

What operate the 4x4 in the transfer box of the landrover freelander 1.8 Petrol. The switch on the gear lever works but the wires are disconnected and I see no switch or valve on the gearbox or transfer...

Freelander is permanent 4 wheel drive. The switch on the gear lever is for downhill decent control. These are usually diconnected when there is a problem with one of the ABS wheel sensors not working, causing three warning lights on the dash to display. Google Freelander Three Amigos.

Check the exhaust mounts on the rear silencer box 1st. Give the rear box a gentle shake. if this seems ok, the check the bushes on the rear suspension bars and mounts these look like long rods coming from the axle to the chasis. then take the rear wheels off look at the rear springs and mounts.

Black smoke when accelerating and seems to be just underpowered

Have you changed the crancase breather situated at the rear of the engine by the air filter, cost is about £30 from Landrover, should be changed every 12000 miles, often lasts 60000 miles and then it shows a problem. If not changed the crancase will pressurise and you will get oil coming out of the engine all over the place and clouds of soke from exhaust.
