Sounds like you need a new alternator. If you know how to take your alternator out (consult a chilton's), take it to autozone or a similar parts store and they usually have an alternator tester. If it is bad, buy one from them and get some money back for the core. If you can avoid taking it to the shop, do it, because they will way overcharge you and the alternator is easy to replace. Usually it is just a couple of cables, and a tensioner that you can loosen to take the belt off so that you can remove it.

These two faults (no charge & battery drain) indicates a fault with the alternator specifically either the voltage regulator or any of the diodes. Though it is possible to repair them individually, it is more to your advantage to replace the whole alternator.

Pls be reminded though that the battery + terminal is directly connected to the alternator's output and therefore safety precautions preclude that the battery terminal be removed. However, doing so could and would reset the car's computer. Additionally, most car stereos would require a security code in the event battery terminal is removed.
