Hi,

Since you did not post that the idle is rough, I would assume that what you are referring to is that engine will not idle when cold. Areas/components to check would be (depends on the regional version of your engine):

  1. auto throttle choke;
  2. Air idle valve (electrical);
  3. injector and injector pump (least likely).
Worst case scenario, have your compression checked.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Tip

Easier starts in the cold temps.

If your getting hard or no starts in the winter/cold temps cycle the glow plugs 2-3 times. They are programmed to cycle up to 120 seconds or 2 minutes which in some cases isn't enough. Turn the key to ignition (not start) and allow the plugs to heat for about 90 seconds then back off again. Do this 2-3 times and your diesel should fire up. If extremely cold plug it in for an hour which should be enough to assist in starting.

Engine struggles to start when cold n wants to stay running after shutting off key

sounds like the choke is sticking closed or needs to be adjusted and the carbon build up from this condition is glowing red hot in the combustion chamber so when you turn off key the fuel keeps lighting off and you have run on. that is if the vehicle has a carb if it is fuel injected then i would check to see if injectors are leaking some older FI. cars had cold start valves and they went bad all the time

Glowing manifold

The good thing is no fire. This happens when there is a severe misfire mainly with the ignition system. A blown head gasket cannot make this happen. The ignition fired out of sequence, a jumped timing belt will cause the vehicle timing to ****** so a timing belt is not the issue.Your solution and the fix is get a whole new distributor with a cap and rotor(the rotor internally broked) sparkplug wires new sparkplugs . A plugged catalytic will cause the car to have no power when acclerating , you didnt blow the engine a blown engine cannot cause a glowing manifold. only a good engine can

Are you letting the glow plugs get hot enough? Does it have glow plugs? How about the battery? Does it die down while all this is happening? Might want to think about using starting fluid on cold days. My tractor would fire on cold days and the battery would be half dead, but I always waited for the plugs to get hot enough.

Need to change glow plugs on a mercedes C220D 1998

dont bother too much with thebullshit recipe .mercedesbenz were built in a cold country and have the cold start tecnique off pat .you need to establish if all the glow plugs are working .,if the engine misses and runs rough when it does start then the glow plugs are not all working but you need to test them with a test light and i would be inclined to think you will need to replace them. do them all as the ones that do work will stop soon.they all seem to go around the same time------------"youdoit "

Won't start when at operating temp

you may want to inspect the oil viscosity, you should be running 15w40 anything else may be to thin and when it warms up will not provide enough pressure to activate injectors, it could also be a high pressure oil leak, when warm the oil leaks faster and the pump at cranking speeds is not turning fast enough to create enough pressure to activate injectors, but when running is able to turn fast enough.

B 2500 diesel pickup hard start from cold

Hey mate,

I have a Mazda B2200 from 1985, which has the same R2 diesel motor, and I had this same problem, which was exacerbated by the cold of winter....even here in a mild Melbourne.

Each time you turn the ignition on, the QSS (Quick Start System) powers up the glow plugs for about three seconds. This recycles again about three times, then.....nothing. The QSS reckons that you ought to have the bugger running by now!

In my desperation, I located the cable to the four glow plugs, and ran a second wire from the battery (+) via a push-button switch which I installed on the dash. This is my glow-plug BOOST circuit.

Now, when I want to start from c-c-c-cold, I push the button (with the ignition on) for about ten or fifteen seconds, which gives the glow plugs a goodly time to heat up the combustion chamber, and when I hit the starter, she usually fires up with a rattle, and a cloud of grey exhaust smoke.

BINGO!

(Of course, once the motor has warmed up, there is no need to use this BOOST circuit, for the combustion chambers are already hot enough to detonate the injected fuel.)

Have a go at it, as I know that it works!

John.
