I looked at wiring diagram for your starter motor, If the diagram is correct, no starter relay.
There are two voltage circuits at starter motor. One comes from the battery, hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the crank position, comes from integrated power module. And is wired through the neutral or clutch switch, depending on the tranny. Your security system may be involved?
The starter motor usually grounds through the engine block.

My database doesn't have starter removal for this vehicle, although I do have a wiring diagram.

Some electrical testing should be done on the starter circuit , connection's , cable's etc..... Voltage drop testing , Looking at wiring diagram's to see what all is involved in the starter circuit for your vehicle. Drains your battery when ? Driving ,sitting over night ? Parastic draw on electrical system ? Do you know how to test automotive electrical circuit's ? If not your best bet mite be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop.

You need to look at a wiring diagram to see what controls the starter ! Possibly a starter relays contacts are stuck closed keeping B+ voltage applied to the starter ! You can find free wiring diagrams at http://bbbind.com/free_tsb.html .I also see a electronic control module is involved . There are two relays starter control relay and starter relay !

there is no easy way I included diagram of bolts, to remove that's easy, before that you must unbolt steering column there is 1 bolt right in front of starter ,before you unbolt it make sure that wheels are straight ahead and steering wheel locked in place, remove bolt and push or compress steering column and move to side, remove wires and note witch ones go where , drop starter down to remove.

2008 mazda tribute. replacing the starter. I am not sure what sub model or engine size you have in the suv so i will use the 3.0 engine , the method should be close to do .First remove the negative battery terminal from battery. next raise truck off the ground and support with stands.

Remove the air cleaner and then remove the shift cable at transmission.
Remove the two transmission bracket bolts, detach the wire harness retainer and position aside the transmission cable and bracket.
remove the two starter wires on the starter and set aside, (make sure battery negative cable is off)
Remove the two starter bolts and then pull starter out.
to install reverse directions.

The starter should be located on the left side of the engine. That is the side nearest the front of the car. Typically the transaxle spans a portion of the right side of the engine. You may also find related info on tha Autozone website. Enter your vehicle info then go to "view job diagram" on the right side of the page.
