I went to the starter solinoid and found a wire pulled off and corrosion on the pin it had to attach to ... i am now figuring that that was always the problem now that I cleaned them up and reconnedted and voila.... starting fine.

thanks for your ideas incase the problem comes back.

Hi i had the problem on a freinds escudo(i also own a 93 vitara, the switch is normaly ok but mechanical wear doesnt allow the conctiontion between the lock and switch to drive the switch far enough foward,on the escudo i loosened the screw (under the steering column cover) and twist clockwiseand retighten screw, i also straped it tight with a cable tie as it didnt sit perfectly when the screw was tightened, after a couple of goes it turned over every time and is functioning well asi write. The vitara is not as bad so i rotated it and used locktite glue(it barly moved but is enough to cause reliable swithching .hope this helps cheers

If the key will not turn, tryy wiggling the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn key. Sometimes you have to pull on it hard to get it to turn and release.

Key won't turn, won't shift from Park

My 2003 Saturn l200 2.2 ecotec did this when the battery was dead. Put some juice on the battery, then the car came out of park, and I was able to remove the key. To the car, there's a vast difference between a sluggish battery and a dead battery. It may have enough amps to crank it, but it wont start w/out full output from the battery.

Sometimes the steering wheel has a lock mode when the car is off, and then gets stuck there. Try wiggling the wheel after you start the car.

Steering/brake is locked and key wont turn

Assuming the car is not running and you are trying to start it, sometimes the steering wheel is locked from the wheel thrying to turn back on itself and this won't allow the key to turn. Try turning the steering wheel all the way to the left or right then while the wheel turned, try to turn the key.

My steering wheel locks up when I put it in park, and when I try to restart it, it won't crank. The key won't turn. What do I need to do?

grab the steering wheel and turn it left or to the right and sometimes you might have to put a little effort in it but one way the steering wheel will move about 1-2" and as you are moving it with one hand take the other hand and turn the key and it should turn a lot easier.this is a common thing and if you can try to have the wheels straight and try not to use the steering wheel to get in or out of the vehicle and the wheel should not lock and make it so hard on you.you have to use both hands at the same time one moving the wheel and the other one turning the key but start moving the wheel in the in direction that it moves the most then turn the key.

All you need to do is turn your steering wheel to the left all the way till it stops then put your key in while still holding the steering wheel to the left, turn the key to the on position this should release your steering wheel!
