Question about 1999 Subaru Forester

Open Question

How difficult is it to replace A/C clutch and compresser on a 99 Forester?

Mechanic tells me I "may" need a new compresser now after he took the A/C clutch off in February because the bearing were shot and it was squealing. Can I do it myself?

Trust me it is quite an excercise and not worth doing yourself. With the proper tools, a hoist and a my mate who is a Guru Subaru Mech it took 4 hours. Without having done it before and without the Hoist ( which is wha I was going to do initially ) I'd say you wouldn't get much change out of 8 - 12 hours.

Ask the mechanic if the clutches both came from the same source and if they were rebuilt units from the same re-manufacturer. The material used to resurface a clutch can cause this results.

SOURCE: Procedure for replacing rear wheel bearings 2000 Forester

i'm assuming you don't have a hubshark, this is a tool that will alllow you to remove the bearing while the knuckle is attached to the car,you may be able to rent this tool at a auto prts store .if not you need to remove the entie knuckle, first remove the trailing arm bolt, then the lateral link bolt{long and stubborn bolt},disassemble the brake shoes and parking brake cable, abs sensor if equipped the knuckle to strut bolt{no marking necessary they are not eccentric} then you need a to use or borrow a press to remove hub and bearings good luck

If the pilot bearing was the problem it would make noise with the clutch pushed and go away when you let it out. Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission?

Could be broken rings or crank shaft bearings slipping.
Get the compression checked and that will tell you either you need an overhaul or another motor.

It's likely the clutch was not fitted perfectly straight, if it is set off center then the clutch will ALWAYS be slipping a little, Get hot and wear out prematurely.

You want to change from a standard transmission to an automatic transmission? You need a new transmission, clutch, gearshift, shift linkage just to start. You will be money ahead selling the car you have and buying one with an automatic.
