    How do I replace a knock sensor on an 01 1500 5.3L?

  • grip28 Apr 15, 2009

2000 chevy tahoe 5.3l v8 both knock sensors are bad and i do not know where they are located

  • murillom2000 Apr 18, 2009

I have a problem with the knock sensor being bad or going bad per my mechanic. He showed me another engine (5.3 L. V8) to show me where the sensors are located. This looks like it can be an expensive repair from a labor cost stand point. The sensors are located under the intake manifold on top of the engine. I was quoted approx. $300 to replace them. This quote was conservative!

The knock sensors are located in the rocker valley underneath the intake manifold. GEt a hynes manual to assist you in replacing them. There is acertain tightening sequence when taking the manifold on and off. It is made of a composite plastic so use care and do not over tighten.

Since your there, you should replace the vally pan gasket (dealer only part about $30) and the knock sensor seals (also dealer only about $5 a peice) make sure u don't get any junk down the motor by placing clean rages in each intake port and if replacing vally pan gasket, put rags in it's opening. Make sure all matting surfaces are clean. I jus suggest this because by replacing the knock sensors u already are going to have to replace the intake set. (get felpro from auto store much better than oem trust me) and since u have to pull the pcv valve just replace it to a hole wopping $5 at auto store. I suggest this because the 5.3 motor has a habit of loosing vacume and running bad. All these parts are related to that and if u are there do it once and do it right! Hope this helps everyone.

SOURCE: need picture of knock sensor location on a 1999

In the valley under the intake, one in the front and one in the back.

It takes about 3 hrs to replace them and it's going to run you around $140 for parts. However, they rarely go bad. Usually it is due to wire chaffing or corrosion due to a coolant leak.

the computer receive signals if engine knocking and adjust the timing till stop. Before replace the sensors make sure the engine have no other misfire ,bad gas or vacuum leak.plug scan tool and read the code.Only circuit problem will be a true knock problem. Inspect all wire connectors before start taking a part.

How can i manually reset the computer on my 99 chevy silverado 1500 4x4? my oil pump is weak and it has a dry start and when i started it this mornin i think it kicked the knock sensor and shut my motor...

The knock sensor will not cause a no-start. The knock sensor only retards the timing when the engine is running. If the starter is not working we need to check the battery voltage, battery cables, starter, engine ground, neutral safety switch, ignition switch, security system. These are the only things that can cause a no crank.
If you really have the urge to clear your computer disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 minutes.

I have a 99 chevy 1500 4x4 5.3 l got code po 332 put new ones in same code saws low voilts

This condition may be the result of corrosion of the rear bank knock sensor due to water intrusion into the sensor cavity. This condition is more apparent on vehicles in which customers frequently wash the engine compartment. Replace the rear bank knock sensor and build a dam (wall) around the sensor using RTV to divert water away from the sensor. Also, check for corrosion on the connector plug. Visually inspect the wiring going to the Rear Bank Knock Sensor for damage. After you have replaced the sensor, and checked for damages, have the code reset and see if it comes back.

Knock sensor 1999 Legacy 2.2

As far as there being no knock sensor on a 99 2.2 I beg to differ. I have a 99 legacy and just had a diagnostic done and mine is bad. If there is no knock sensor why would it say it was bad and why does Auto Zone, Advanced Auto and my local Subaru dealer sell them. Mine is located under the throttel body and they are rather hard to get to. No offence to who ever said ther is no knock sensor but maby you should recheck your information becuse I know there is a knock sensor since I just changed mine.
