How much gear oil i need for my fiest 1.2 - 1998 Ford Expedition

too much oil could be a big factor in your problem
most have a fill plug in the side about 1/2 way up and that is the level required
if the clutch operation is a problem , it will appear as you try to select 1 st and reverse as it will slash the gears
the operation will depend on what oil you used and if you used any oil additives
I personally use oep 80-90 gear oil but some manufacturers recommend a lighter straight mineral oil so check that you have the right oil in use
trouble selecting other gears ( synchros not quick enough) could indicate a clutch master cylinder problem and not a clutch problem by not fully disengaging the pressure plate during changes
problem box is the last option to consider

The rear end gear box usually has fill plug about 1/3 of the way up the gear box housing. The gear oil is usually filled to the bottom side of the plug. In other words, if you were to try to add gear oil, you would stop when the oil starts to spill back out of the plug hole.

If auto you refill through the auto dipstick, If manual you will find a plug approx 1/3 - 1/2 way up the side of the g/box. The engine oil drain plug will be infront of the gear box (should be a 14 mm bolt) located on the engine sump.

1.remove speedometer driven gear
2. remove drain plug, and drain oil
3. fill trans, check fluid by speedometer gear, just above gear see F & L, oil level is between F & L
4. install speedometer driven gear

To catch gear oil, use a clean container with 3.0 liter capacity with a scale.
^ Shift rod is secured.
- Drain gear oil by removing oil drain plug - arrow 1 - and then pivot pin - arrow 2 -.
- Install pivot pin - arrow 2 - with a new O-ring
- Screw in oil drain plug - arrow 1 -.
- Now rotate bracket - A - back into initial position in direction of - arrow - so that shift rod moves freely again.

Top off gear oil quantity in container to 1.7 liters.

- Remove switch for Back-Up Light Switch F4 - arrow -.
- Connect a standard hose (approximately 600 mm long, outer circumference 10 mm) with funnel.
- Insert hose into mounting hole of back-up light switch (2nd technician) and fill the transmission oil.
- Reinstall switch for Back-Up Light Switch F4 - arrow -.
- Check function of selector mechanism.
- Install complete air filter housing.
- Install noise insulation.

90w gear oil

this easy, drain oil from gear box remove that drive shaft (u need a ball joint splitter)
replace gearbox seal, pry out old 1 with screw driver, gently tap new in, oil edge of new seal 1st. replace oil, ps dont leave to long as will damage gearbox when lack of oil

try shifting trough all speeds with the engjen off if you can do that then you need to remove your trans 7check your syncronizers & input shaft for wear,pitting or binding

The problem is with the gear oil. To keep ahead of the rest BMW started what they call life time oil for their gear boxes, though that sounds great it doesn't really work in reality, they have now gone back to recommending a gear oil change every 60k miles.

In short you need to change your gear oil and soon, the oil in your gear box is no longer effective and will damage the gear box. You'll need about 5 litres for your car and costs around £15 a litre, expensive stuff!! I had the same problem with my 328i auto, the dealer was clueless and kept quoting the lifetime oil, I changed the oil and the problem has gone and it's so much smoother.

try 1 0f these solutions giving the cars age and not much discription.
1 check the level of your gear box oil

2 change the gear box oil or if automatic change the fluid for the transmision.( since you say changeing gears i take it that it's manual gear box.

3 if manual the gears need over hauled giving the age of your car.

4 your clutch cable needs adjusted due ware on the clutch or if hydraulic the clutch system needs bleed with new fluid.
