SOURCE: Service engine soon

I'm a total amateur and that's why I had to ask the source.. worked in my case as advised by dealer's service center advisor;

- put the key into the ignition and turn all the way as if you're going to start the engine, however do not start

- hit breaks tree times within 5 sec

very simple..no codes..battery disconnect etc.

2000 grand am gt. Check engine light is off but the Service engine soon light is on. There are no error codes. I have already changed the oil and reset the oil light.

Service engine soon ? Do you mean SERVICE VEHICLE SOON Indicator
The amber SERVICE VEHICLE SOON indicator is an alert to the driver whenever there are specific current codes stored in the BCM or in the event of a loss of Class 2 serial data.

If your vehicle has a check engine light ,it doesn't have service engine soon .One or the other .

Check engine light comes on

A malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), commonly referred to as the "Check Engine Light" is an indicator of malfunction of the computerized engine management system. It is found on the instrument console of most automobiles. When illuminated, it is typically either an amber or red color. On vehicles equipped with OBD-II, the light has two stages: steady (indicating a minor fault such as a loose gas cap or failing oxygen sensor) and flashing (indicating a severe fault, that will eventually destroy the catalytic converter, such as a misfire). When the MIL is lit, the engine control unit stores a fault code related to the malfunction, which can be retrieved with a scan tool and used for further diagnosis. The malfunction indicator lamp is usually labeled with the text check engine, service engine soon, check engine soon, or a picture of an engine.
The MIL appeared in the early 80s along with computerized engine controls. Even the earliest systems, such as GM's CCC (Computer Command Carburetor) system had self diagnosis functionality. When the computer detected a fault, it illuminated the MIL. Up until OBDII, on most cars the MIL could output codes, when two pins on the ALDL are jumped, the light would flash the codes, for instance (blink) (pause) (blink) (blink) for code 12. Some manufacturers retained this feature even after OBDII, such as Honda.

Hope this help (remember comment and rated this). Good luck.

Service eng light soon on

When the engine control computer senses that there is a problem with one or more of the of the components it stores a fault/trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. To properly diagnose what is wrong, you need to take your car to a mechanic or a dealer. The technician at the dealership or a garage will then hook up the scanner to the car computer and retrieve the stored trouble code(s). Then they will look it up in the service manual provided by a car manufacturer. The service manual contains the list of possible codes (over 200 poss codes) and describes what each code means and what needs to be tested. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, what engine parameter is out of normal range. The technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint a defective part.

Service engine soon light came on today. Does not

drop by autozone and they will scan the codes for free (at least the last time i heard it was free) the people there are fairly knowledgable so they should be able to tell you why the light is on.

sometime it's a one off that triggers the light. after three cycles of the key when it hasn't encountered the same problem it will go out.

Whath does "service engine soonmeans"

SERVICE ENGINE SOON and SERVICE ENGINE NOW are 2 amber warning lights pertaining to the vehicles computers.SERVICE SOON advises you of a problem, although not an emergency should be attended to promptly. Your technician can trace the problem by accessing fault codes through the climate control panel. SERVICE NOW indicates a more severe problem which will most likely precipitate a failure / breakdown. The CHANGE OIL LIGHT indicates by time and mileage is a separate light.
