The transmission has always been sluggish on take off, but recently the reverse gear seems to engage initially and then again a couple of seconds later when the car is at operating temperature. When the car is cold there seems to be only the one engagement. Would changing the fluid and filter be the initial step to consider in rectifying this problem or is a transmission rebuild or repair involving removing the transmission the likely cure. regards me

SOURCE: AUDI A4 AUTOMATIC SLOW TO

Not overly familiar with Audis but it sounds like either a.) you have an electronic tranny that has a serious bug or b.) there's a problem in the computer of the car itself. What is sounds like is the car is taking a long time to "understand" that you're telling it to move forward. How new is the car? When you push on the gas before the three minutes, what happens?

SOURCE: 96 explorer turns over but starter is not engaging

I always check remans before they are installed; the Bendix may not be advancing the starter gear or you may have teeth missing from the flywheel. I'd pull the starter and check the condition of the flyhweel.

SOURCE: Transmission acts as if it does not want to engage

gm transmissions are infamous for there transmission failures. and gm refuses to recall them. (I found out from many people and mechanics with the same problem) had been made of cheap metal, and eventually shatters. gm finally made the part from steel on 2003 and later models. go to (my3cents.com) on computer. click on gm complaint 2002 transmission. hope this helps toolman,

My 92 Lexus LS400 recently lost all forward gears but reverse works just fine.

You can only perform certain tasks yourself on a transmission. In this case it sounds like you need to visit a transmission shop. On occasion cleaning the oil and filter, making sure the trans is upto the correct level on fluid, may resolve an issue. If it does not then you probably need professional assistance.

You shoould visit a good independent rather than a lexus specialist as they will almost certainly charge an arm and leg for labor

I bought a 92 Chev 2500 4X4 from a guy just recently. He said the tranny wont go into gear. I found the transfer case was in neutral. So i put it in gear and away it goes. But reverse seamed sluggish. ...

If your transmission is a 700r4 (4l60) you have a reverse band that engages when you want to go in reverse. since it drives forward your low reverse clutch and your fwd clutch are working. This leaves the band which was probably slipping now is not engaging.

Transaxle slow to ingage when put in drive or reverce. fluid level is full.

Soes it take a couple seconds to engage in reverse? Does it seem to slam into gear when it does engage? If so you need a Valve Body. It' in the top of the transmission and it is about $350 to replace with a good used one

2000 Subaru Outback transmission problem

After a good deal of research and several shops suggesting a rebuild of the transmission, I decided to have the trans fluid and filters changed before doing anything. It was a tough call because it could have been a waste of $125. As soon as the spin off filter was removed you could see it was blocked. So the hydraulic pressure in the system was way down, still enough to engage reverse and enough to work all the shifts, but not enough to engage forward without a slight tap on the accelerator.

My Subaru has 240 000 km on it and I suppose the clutch pack rebuild wouldn't hurt, but as it is now it engages quickly and shifts up are noticeably smoother.

May not be the solution for every case, but it solved my situation.

Sluggish Transmission when cold

You need to change the transmission fluid and filter as soon as possible. Being sluggish when cold is a sign of a very clogged up filter.
