How to change your oil in 3 easy steps

(1) Getting Ready When getting ready, it is important to have the right tools and materials on hand, such as jack stands, a socket set and an oil drain pan. Let your Car engine run for 10 minutes before you drain the oil since warm oil is easier to drain than cold. Make sure you park on a level surface or, if your car has a low clearance, jack it up or drive it onto a ramp. If youre jacking up the car, use two jack stands instead of one. check the type of filter you need against the make and model of your vehicle

(2) Draining the Oil and Changing the Oil Filter To drain the oil, crawl under the car and look for the oil drain plug under the engine near the front of the car. Position your pan beneath the plug then use a socket or spanner to loosen the plug, turning counterclockwise. Once loosened, you can use your hand to remove the plug and the hot oil starts pouring out. Make sure all the old oil is drained into the pan. Once its completely drained, wipe the drain plug and the plug opening. Now replace the drain plug gasket and use a wrench to reinstall the plug but dont make it too tight.

Next, look for the oil filter. They are usually at the side of the engine. Place the oil pan beneath the filter in case any oil remains. Unscrew the oil filter (use gloves if it is too hot) and wipe the filter area clean, especially where it mounts to the engine. Dab a bit of your new oil on the rubber seal of the new filter and then screw it in by hand. You dont have to use a filter wrench to tighten the oil filter.

(3) Installing New Oil Remove the oil filler cap thats located at the top of the engine. Position the funnel at the opening and slowly start pouring in the new oil You might want to check your manual for the proper oil capacity but, typically, you will need three or four litres of oil. Once youre done, put back the oil filler cap. Start the engine, let it run for a minute and then check the dipstick. If you need to, add more oil. Now check for any leaks near the oil drain plug and the filter. If you do find leaks, simply tighten the plug or oil filter.

Youre done.

I need to drain some oil out of my vauxhall combo? I'm a girl . . .

Hi Michael, Go to the store and buy the required amount of new good quality multi grade engine oil and an oil filter. Chock (block) the wheels so that the vehicle cannot move back or front and then remove the ignition key. Get yourself something to lay on and a container which can slide under the vehicle. Depending on who and how the vehicle has been maintained, you should find a protective cover under the engine compartment (but some lazy mechanics leave it off, after working on the vehicle) Don't be lazy! The cover helps protect the engine and helps keeps water off important parts. If its there remove it. On the lowest part of the sump you will see a bolt which is in fact a drain plug. Clean the surrounding area and place the container under it and then loosen the plug. Drain all the oil into the container and then replace the plug. Do not reuse the oil you've drained as it may be contaminated with mud sand or other bits and pieces. Remove the old filter (because I'm thinking that just maybe it hasn't been changed for some time) and then fill the new filter with the new oil. It can take a little time so be patient Dip your finger in the clean oil (making sure your finger is clean first) and wipe a smear of it all around the rubber seal on the filter lip. Clean the surrounding area and then fit it tightly by hand. Fill the engine with the required amount of oil and check the level on the dip stick. When its at the correct level, check to make sure there are no static leaks and once satisfied there are none, start the engine and check again, especially from the filter. There you go....If you replace the air filter and the fuel filter at the same time you've saved the dough you'd be paying for a lube service! Don't forget to dispose of the oil correctly in the correct place. Regards John

Had new distributor put 3 days ago , 200 miles , had a slight tick sound so was watching oil carefully, noticed was leaking worse than before, so I changed the oil to put new filter on, drove 4 moles...

  • Hi, for oil to leak that fast you have got a massive leak. The ticking itself could be from low oil. First check the oil plug (where you drain the oil) on the oil pan with will be the bottom most part of the engine. It is possible the plug is not holding tight, the gasket may be old, torn or just plain missing. Sometimes people will strip them oil plugs. When this happens the pan has to be tapped a little over and a new, slightly oil plug installed.

  • On the oil filter housing are oil cooler line that have to hold a lot of pressure. Follow those lines to see if they are leaking oil.

  • I don't see a front seal leaking leaking quite that bad. A valve cover I am not sure would leak quite like that either. Your oil pan gasket could leak like this though. When you check the oil pan plug look strait up to all them little bolt holding the oil pan to the lower part of the engine. If leaking is noted then snug them bolts up or have them snugged up.

  • You may have to throw a piece of cardboard on the ground and crawl underneath with a flashlight and get a better eyeball on the leak. What ever the leak it is massive and should be repaired before driving or you could loose to much oil and seize your engine. The ticking. in my opinion, is the engine telling you it is very low on oil as it is.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

I don't know how much oil i need for an oil change

With oil filter you'll need 5 quarts. After changing oil and filter run briefly and check for leaks. Shut down the engine and check oil level is correct.
I hope this may have helped,

I need to change the oil and filter. What size is

Make sure your car is off and cool (cannot have been running for the last hour as the oil will burn)

Owner's manual will say exactly what oil and oil filter to use. Most stores have cross reference sheets as well

You'll need a socket wrench with an adapter for the oil filter and an adapter for the drain plug
You could get an oil filter strap as well instead of the adapter.
Your filter will be located on the bottom of the engine, either on the front or back of it

Remove the filler cap on the top of the engine....

Put a drain tray under the drain pan and remove the drain plug (it will leak oil out as you're loosening it). Do not lose the drain plug as you'll be using it still. Check plug to see if there's any extra metal on it (ie. engine parts are grinding) Let drain and then repeat for oil filter.

Once completely drained, put the plug back in and then poor a bit of oil into the oil filter and then reinstall the filter. Pour the required amount of oil in through the top of the engine and close the cap....

How do i change oil in 2002 saturn sc2

you will need approx. 5 quarts of Oil 10W 30
you will need an oil pan, rags an oil filter wrench(walmart--very cheap). New oil filter obviously. 14mm wrench or socket for the drain plug.

Procedure: let car warm up (this will help drain all oil out faster and more efficiently)

take drain plug out first,
let that drain while you place a little oil in the new filter (if it is a horizontal mounting filter then there is no need to put any in)
use your oil filter puller and take off the old filter. that may have a little residual drainage; after that place the new filter in and then replace the drain plug(once all the oil has stopped running out. a little bit left in there won't hurt) place at least three quarts in to the filler hole. then start the engine for aproxx 30 sec. This will allow the oil to fill the oil filter and also heat it up a bit. let it sit for a minute then check the level. It may take a little over 4 quarts, you will have to check the dip stick as you pour more in. take it for a test drive then park on the level, let it sit for a minute, then check it again. if it is way over then you must drain some back out. over filling can damage your engine.
