Question about 1999 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

1 Answer

S10 Will Not Start

I have an 1999 S10. The other day she gave up running as I was driving to work.

The fuel pump is working, and I am getting a spark. I replaced the rotor and rotor cap. Still I am not getting a crank. The vehicle has 175,000 miles on it.

Your thoughts and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Agustin

    Brian (bbtoast),

Thank you for responding soon. The fuel filter has been removed, and the engine light does turn on. The engine is the 4.3L model, and it is turning while it is hooked up to a battery charger. The mechanic that is working on it now, used some quick fuel and the engine started but sounded a litle rough. He is currently looking into the sensor you mentioned earlier. Hopefully this information can allow you to better determine a sololution or at least point us it the general direction to solving my mechanical issue.

    Sincerely,

    James

    Brian,

CPS was dirty and appeared to have a weak connection. We cleaned it out hoping it would work. No dice, we changed it out, still no dice.

In a million years I never would have thought of getting a code reader. I did this once with a Doge Omni, which worked. Tomorrow I will see about getting a code reader to see if I can narrow down the problem.

    Thank you,

    James

The fuel pump is working...are you saying that you are getting fuel to the intake, or just that the pump is working?

Need to verify which.....

Gut instinct is a sensor of some sort is not reading. I have seen this with a Crankshaft Position Sensor. Car just quits, sensor cant see where the CPS is, so it turns over and over and you can smell fuel from the exhaust, but nothing.

Give me more details...like which engine, fuel filter status (new or old) check engine light.

What exactly do you mean by: "Still I am not getting a crank"? Are you saying the engine won't sustain, or do you mean that the starter won't crank the engine?

Thanks

Brian

I have come across some instances where a vehicle will not sustain itself (stay running) for no other reason than a weak battery. For example; the car will turn over, then as soon as you let go of the key, it will die. The fix was the battery.

Even though the starter would engage, the battery caused the engine to not continue to run. I would put a known good battery, clean the posts, and rule out the battery as the problem. The vehilcles that I have seen this problem were Dodge's, but there could be something to this one.

My gut says that the battery issue described above is not the answer, but is worth eliminating as the cause.

Also, if you can get ahold of a code reader to see if any check engine codes are showing up, that would also be beneficial.

Let me know what you find.....Brian

2000 Chevy S10 has spark but no fuel Pressure

Try 2 jumper wires. Since you found a broken ground wire, you should get under the truck and check them all. You can make them up and install them anywhere, but in this case, particularly to the fuel pump.. Remember, the more modern the car, the less steel there is, and the more important ground wires are. Then run another jumper wire from the positive (+) post on the battery to the fuel pump, and see if that works.
Be blessed.

I have a 96 Chevy s10 it cranks but won't start I

You need to find out if the fuel pump is working, getting gas up to the engine.
If the pump is working and seen to have good fuel pressure, check ignition by checking for spark.. To work, the engine needs, you know, gas, air, spark, and compression. Why people say, check for gas, check for spark.

Ok i have a 1999 hyundai accent wont start changed fuel pump and it started ran very bad very! turned it off wouldnt start back up again checked spark plugs no spark and no power going to fuel pump we are...

Changing the pump doesn't affect the spark so lets start a that the beginning?? Why was the pump replaced and was it running fine before changing the pump? Also plugs could be fouled as well but if it was working fine before the fuel pump it will be fine afterwards if getting gas and the fuel pump was the problem., Also how did you verify no spark??

S10 Won't Start

It would be the fuel pump, it would not be the fuel pressure regulator.

Chevy S10 starts and then shuts off.

well i would try squirting fuel into the throttle body when it is in its not running mode. if it starts and runs you know the fuel pump is at fault .. or its not getting the right fuel pressure from it..
