Question about Hyundai Elantra

1 Answer

Hi I have a 1992 1.6Litre Lantra that was bought to do up. It has a problem with constant white smoke comming out the tail pipe. Also there is a problem with the idle, when it first starts the idle is high then after it warms up the idle surges. Apart from that the engine sseems to run fine. P.S. When we bought the car the water pump was leaking and the heater hose had a split in it. They have been replaced and the cooling system seems to be fine now

Sounds as though it has a blown head gasket.

Yes, a compression test would show at least one cylinder with a reduced compression, could very well be more that one. When you have the head gasket changed (or if you change it yourself) ensure the head and block a thoroughly checked for cracks, you may not be able to see a crack visually as they tend to open up when the engine heats up. This could then become a very expensive repair or even an entire engine change. From memory these cars used a Mitsubishi engine? If it does require major repairs I would recommend buying another car, preferably not a Hyundai, as the repairs could very well be more than the car is worth.

4g15 engine carburetor smoking only when engine is cold

smoking from where?, front of car, middle or tail pipe.

is this your first car, or first car and first winter (white steam?)
there are 3 kinds of smoke
black , carb flooding (ask why)
white, oil, burning, take for ever to go away
white steam, goes away fast and smells like Antifreeze, sweet and nasty.

and all carbs smoke black in the tail pipe end, when cold, unless
you very carefully tune the choke plate.
so do tell? what?

88 thunderbird white smoke and water coming from tail pipe

Possibly a blown head gasket, letting coolant into the cylinders to be burned. White smoke is usually coolant burning. Have the engine's compression tested to verify.

White smoke coming out tail pipe when accelerating

We had a bad smoking problem with our porsche. It started just on acceleration then constant. It turned out to be the air oil separator which was able to be fixed at home for under $200

I have a 1997 bmw 528i and its constantly overheating also theres a lot of thick white smoke that coming from the tail pipe. What could the problem be?

Unfortunately, you are experiencing two of the classic signs of a bad head gasket. Have the coolant checked with a test kit from your favorite auto parts store to verify this. I would check the radiator coolant regularly to verify coolant loss. Sometimes engine cooling system designs can allow for a bad hose to come in contact with the exhaust and make smoke out of the tail pipe so have all of the hoses checked too.
Hope this helps.

Constant smoke from tail pipe.

If its smoking that bad you should be able to tell if its oil or antifreeze by the smell, stand behind the car as its running, if its white and you smell a sweet smell its antifreeze if its blue and smells like a oil refinery its oil.
