try disconnecting the alternator overnight , the main cable from it to the battery , ive seen defective alternators run battery's down , also they make a device that can follow current thru an electric wire , I used to think they were expensive , but I now know they are not , there called non contact dc amp meters , and you can pick one up for less than sixty dollars now , you can use this device to follow the wires right to the defective device (probably the alternator )

Problem charing

"charging"?
assuming you have got a battery warning light on dash? And it obviously doesn't go out. check the large red wire at the back of the alternator with a multi meter and you should have same voltage there as at the battery and its in good condition . If you have a good voltage there and a good engine earth then you need to disconnect the small wire at the back of the alternator - that should put out the warning light on the dash, This will prove the warning light circuit is ok. As long as your vehicle battery is ok and has a good voltage the only other thing that could be wrong apart from the alternator itself is the drive belt being broken or loose.

disconnect the earth wire from the battery and install an amp meter in the circuit . This will give you an idea of the current draw that flattens batteries . Next remove the battery wire from the alternator ( Carefully as it is a live wire ) and hold it away and read the amp meter. If the current is close to none then remove and repair the alternator as you have a faulty diode in the plate

I have a draw on the battery on my 85 Toyota pickup it kills a fully charged battery in about 2 hours... Ive put a volt tester between the disconnected positive battery cable and the positive battery post...

Go to You Tube Video & see how to do a parasitic CURRENT
drain test

What you have done so far with a test light & volt meter is basically
doing nothing

You need an amp meter & a wiring diagram, then pull fuses one
at a time, to get to the circuit that causes the drain, then use the
prints to test that circuit for voltage drops

2005 lincon aviator charing system 12.2 volts after alternator install

check the black/orange wire at the alternator for battery voltage if no power check the fuesable link ( A )

check the orange/light blue wire at the alternator for battery voltage if no power check the fuesable links ( B & C )

check the light green/red wire for 12 volt with the engine running if no power replace the PCM.

if all wires have the proper voltage then replace the alternator

GOOD LUCK

This is not a car question. I have a boat (Ford Escort Diesel engine) that uses a separate voltage regulator. My alternator has not been charging properly and there is a 5 amp drain in my system that I...

You can take your voltage regulator and alternator off and take to most auto parts store and they can test them to be sure.

A 5 amp drain is significant if it is a constant drain. You might want to use an accurant clamp on amp meter to troubleshoot it. I assume you installed a fuse panel, so start by pulling all fuses, and then putting them in one at a time - write down your readings. The one that is highest is probably the line you need to troubleshoot.

But before you go through all that, do you have a refrigerator on your boat that is DC? If so, I would make sure that it is turned off before spending time troubleshooting.

If the ignition switch is effected by the loose
key cylinder ,it may play a role

You need to check out the switch
and look at a wiring diagram to see
what role the ign sw plays, with grounding
the alternator regulator,if it does

Put an AMP Meter in either battery cable
to check for excessive drain

What you have doesn't sound quite right, nor does the advice you are getting, though I don't think it would cause a short either.
I think the right way depends on what you want the amp gage to measure. If you want it to read the total output of the generator, you have to connect everything in the car to the other side (opposite from the generator wire). On the other hand, if you just want it to measure what current is going to the battery, then you put the accessory wires on the same side as the wire from the generator. I have made 2 diagram below. A volt meter is easy, and you can have both, if you like. A voltmeter just goes straight to the battery terminals if you want to know for sure that you are charging. You can use plain ground and the alternator wire, but then if there is a fusible link from there to the battery you are not always sure the voltage is getting to the battery. Battery won't charge when car is on. Battery is fine. Believe it's a problem with the wiring

If the alternator has been bench tested and passed then you need to check the big wire for 12volts at the alternator. If you have 12 volts then you need to trace the other wire to the PCM. The charging system is computer controlled and its possible the computer is the issue. To diagnose this correctly go to mitchell1diy online and pay the ten bucks for all the proceduers and wiring diagrams. If the charging system light is off then try this. Charge up the battery. Then turn the lights on for a couple minutes to drain the surface charge. Then using a 12v meter hooked to the battery check the draining voltage while cranking. A good battery will maintain a 12 or better voltage even if the truck does not start. If it goes down fast then the battery is bad. Alot of times when a battery is tested using a professional tester they pass. You may need to remove the fuel pump relay so the truck does not start for this test since your testing the cranking amps. Also with the key out of the ignition and doors locked and the negative unhooked at the battery you can check for parasitic drain. Using a amp meter hooked up inline battery to cable you should have less than 1/10th volt. If any more then you have a component not shutting off. Pull fusses 1 at a time till you find the system thats the issue. Watch the meter as you pull fuses
