When something makes that much noise, it deserves attention.
Aside from the noise (which must have you gritting your teeth at every red light), Describe how the brakes are behaving.
A car that does not Go, is inconvenient.
A car that does not Stop, is dangerous.
If the brakes are still functioning normally, chances are the pads need to be replaced. A quick, relatively inexpensive process. Barring complications, around $20.00 for parts, an hour or less labor.
For your own safety, I strongly recommend you address this problem a soon as possible. The noise is a warning sign.
