Question about Buick Regal

5 Answers

Engine runs perfectly but dies suddenly while driving. No trouble codes stored. No check engine light. Sometimes it will start back after a few seconds, while still coasting, by shifting to neutral and turning key. Other times it will start after a few minutes, sometimes half an hour. The problem went away during the cool months, but is now back with a vengeance. This is a 1999 Buick Regal 3.8 liter with a little over a hundred thousand miles. Started acting up last summer. The car is well maintained and in excellent condition overall.

I think if the fuel pump were defective I would get a diagnostic trouble code related to low fuel pressure or something. But there are no trouble codes.

The problem turned out to be a defective crankshaft position sensor, which worked fine until it got hot, then the engine died suddenly and with no trouble code.

Hi,

A couple of questions pls:

  1. does it die like when you switch off ignition through the switch, the dashboard lights are likewise off?
  2. or engine dies, all dashboard lights lit?
  3. does it die slowly (chugging/fuel starvation) or at any RPM just quits?
  4. anything out of the ordinary, charging light, burning smell, flickering warning lights, others?
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

This could be the fuel pump. to verify this

1.) run the car until it cuts off
2.) pop open the hoot
3.) locate the fuel filter
4.) from the fuel filter there is a cose connecting to the engine
5.) disconnect the hose from the engine
6.) place it in a plastic bottle to capture the gas
7.) turn the ignition on
this should pump the fuel into the bottle if there isnt any then the pump is dead or is dying. if there is then the pump is fine, you may want to examie the gas captured in the bottle to see if it has water in it.

you may also try
servicing the fuel injection system

or

cheecking that the cooling fan and radiator is functioning propperly
to check the cooling fan and radiator run the car with the ac on, if it doesnt cut off then the radiator or cooling fan is the issue.

Usually you get this for problems with the electronic injection, take it to a garage and have injectors and ECU tested.

I would strongly suspect a failing fuel pump. Possibly a defective fuel filter, but with the milage, I would think the fuel pump is going bad.

    Hi,

For knowledge sake, What did resolve the issue with your vehicle? Was it the injector or what?

Windstar 3.0 2000 stalls randomly when starting engine and randomly hesitates and dies when driving. I can drive several miles without symptoms and suddenly it dies or missfires. Any clues?

My first question is - is the check engine light on? If it is you should have trouble codes stored in the computer that would help direct you to what you should test.
If not, it may be tough to figure out until the problem is constant. Most anything electrical can cause the symptom you describe. Heat, moisture, and fatigue can play a role in the problem.

Is the check engine light showing a trouble code on the instrument panel? That may pin the trouble down.

Warning light check engine light turns on, sometimes after 10-20 minutes drive. The engine is perfectly OK. Indicator light is off after the car has "rested" during the night.

You may have a sensor malfunction. Have a mechanic run the codes and see if there are any stored in the computer. Just because the engine runs OK now does not mean it will continue to do so. The reason the light goes off after the vehicle has set over night may be due to the vehicle not sensing the issue after the long passage of time, until you begin driving again.

The 1st thing to do is have a trouble code retrieval test run to see what is making the check engine light come, this is the source of the problem.

Randomly loses power and sometime dies

1st thing to do is have the system tested for the code that caused the check engine light to come, you may also have a fuel pump starting to fail or many other things, the check engine light may be the key. How many wiles on the car?
