my neon starts fine in the morning - but today after I had run ten miles when I tried to start again after being in the supermarket - it gave a horrible noise when I turned the key - the motor did turn after a second - but I don;t trust the local garage - it was in with them last week for oil change and to fix a couple of lights

Take your car to auto zone... have them do a free electrical system load test to see if your charging system is o.k., also have them check your alternator to see if it is producing the proper amps. My buddies car did the same thing, we replaced the starter yesterday but it still has trouble starting and the battery has still got 12.5 volts when we test it... It turns out its his alternator... the voltage regulator fried and was sending 189 amps to the electrical system when its only supposed to send about 88 amps... that should point you in the right direction... good luck.

The first thing I would do is check fuel pressure. If you don't have a gauge shoot some carb spray into the throttle body while somebody cranks it over. If it starts and runs I would bet the fuel pump is bad. Check foir power at the pump to make sure the wiring is o.k.

The starter relay or starter solenoid would be my guess, but I am wondering what the gears on the old starter looked like. If they were in really bad shape (deformation or chunks missing) you may need to replace the flywheel.

1997 Dodge Neon. New battery. Ran fine for a couple of days now it wont start. All I get is a ''click''. Had starter tested and it was fine

If battery is good and fully charged and starter is good, possibly starter solenoid, if not on the starter. Also check battery cables, make sure that all 4 ends have good clean solid connections. Also cables themselves can get so corroded inside that the fix is to replace them. Good luck, please rate this. Thanks
