Wipe the area around the seal clean with a rag, then run it a bit and check the seal. If fresh fluid is evident obviously from that seal, it is bad. The seal itself is easy, just pry it out and tap a new one evenly into place. But the axle has to come out of there first. Buy a Haynes repair manual for your vehicle to get the axle removal procedure. If you are experienced working on cars, it should be fairly easy. The big axle nut has to be loosened and removed, so shaft can be pushed out of the wheel hub. Often the tie rod needs removing, and the lower ball joint disassembled. But get the repair procedure, if you want to do it yourself. Good luck.
fix same problem myself...these's' only 1 inner seal (differential output seal only-about 10$ each) that needs to be replace and new brake shoes (20$ part)..assumed u have rear drums and it leaked diff fluid on the brake shoes..but, i also replaced the brake cylinder (15$ part)-u have to disconnect brake cylinder to remove axle..look on internet for procedures..http://www.yotatech.com/f128/replacing-rear-axle-seals-3rd-gen-4runner-76339/..hope this helps..all dealers are ripoffs-worked at toyota for a year
you need to pull off wheels, brakes, rotor /unit hub bearing, both axles and intermediate shaft, as well as the vac disconnec ton the front axle tube. if only the right side leaks then only then only pull the right axle and intermediate shaft and vac disco. it is a trick with a miller tool to replace the seal. the left side seal is inside the diff and the carrier has to come out to replace it. pete
Drain axel of Fluid, Roemve Diff Cover (Push IN on Axel to reseal at Wheel side) Remove KEEPERS From Insied END of axel then Pull OUT on WHEEL END of Axel. use Proper Seal removal tool to remove seal. Also Use PROPER Install tool for SEAL INSTALL Reverse Procedure to Install. In hopes this helps you Out.
